For everyone in the southwest waiting for fall..

One spring morning, on the way down from my 2nd summit of Chama Peak, i took a different descent route then I had before...

One spring morning, on the way down from my 2nd summit of Chama Peak, i took a different descent route then I had before. This route took me through this grove of Aspen trees and then in to a really deep, dark section of the forest with large Pine trees. As I made my way through the trees, I passed a massive downed Pine that lay on the forest floor next to me. I suddenly had the feeling something was off, and sure enough, looked up and directly into the eyes of a very large black bear with a very distinct look of alarm on her Face just on the other side of the fallen tree, maybe 10 ft away. My guess is that she had some cubs and a den on the other side, and that my presence was an alarming surprise. My stomach dropped into my pants but I just kept walking like it was no big deal. I casually strolled until I was out of view and then jumped into a nearby ravine and booked it the rest of the way. I will never forget this moment and this photo reminds me of that event. You never know what will happen when you get yourself out of your comfort zone..
