Snowliage on Mount Washington! 🍁❄️
Two seasons colliding in one incredible scene.
For years, I’ve wanted to photograph this rare phenomenon known as “snowliage,” when the first snowfall of the season blankets the mountains while the fall foliage is still at or near its peak. This week, I finally got to witness it for myself in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, and it was everything I had hoped for!
What made this particular moment even more special was the timing. Just as the sun was setting, the last golden light of the day washed across the snow covered Presidential Range and the brilliant orange foliage below. The snow, normally a bright white, took on a beautiful warm glow that lasted only a short time before the sun disappeared.
I’ve actually been torn over which photograph to share first. I captured some images earlier in the day when the snow was bright white, creating an incredible contrast against the colorful fall foliage. But there was something about this golden sunset light that made this scene especially memorable.
So, I decided to start with this one! Don’t worry, there are plenty more images coming that show off the snow and foliage in a completely different light.
After years of hoping the timing, weather, foliage, and snow would all come together, I’m incredibly happy I finally got to experience and photograph something this special.
