Funeral Friday. The practice of covering mirrors and stopping clocks in North America was most prevalent during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In many cultures, the first thing done after a death was to move through the house and cover every mirror with a black cloth or sheet. This wasn't just a superstition; it was a profound act of respect. It was believed that the soul of the departed, still lingering in the home, might become trapped if it saw its own reflection, unable to find the path forward. By shrouding the glass, the living gave the deceased the gift of a clear, unburdened transition.

For the mourners, the covered mirrors offered a different kind of grace. In the raw, early hours of grief, there is no place for vanity or the act of looking at oneself. Covering the mirrors forced the family to stop "performing" for the world and simply be present in their loss. It transformed the home into a sanctuary—a place where the focus shifted from the reflection of the face to the reflection of the heart, allowing the community to gather in the darkness of grief until they were ready to see themselves clearly again.

Funeral Friday. While visiting Cypress Gardens in South Carolina, we came across this special gravestone. This is a memorial dedicated to Woody, a beloved resident wood duck who lived in the preserve's Butterfly House. Cypress Gardens is an 80-acre blackwater bald cypress swamp famous as a filming location for movies like The Notebook and The Patriot.

Funeral Friday. The allure of Niagara Falls has long drawn not only sightseers, but also those seeking to test their own mortality against the relentless power of the Horseshoe and American Falls. While the exact number of deaths resulting from intentional stunts or accidental falls is difficult to count, it is estimated that hundreds have perished in the attempt to conquer the falls or during unauthorized ventures into the river. The reality of the water is unforgiving; the sheer volume of over 600,000 gallons per second creates a destructive force that the human body is simply not built to withstand.

For the handful of "daredevils" who have attempted to go over the falls in barrels or other makeshift crafts, the results have been a stark mix of survival and tragedy. The history of the falls is etched with these stories of profound risk, serving as a solemn reminder that while Niagara is a wonder of the world, it is also a place where the line between awe and tragedy is dangerously thin.
