summer magic

the hottest time of year
i remember it being magical once
bicycles, swimming, softball, rhubarb
fishing, kool-aid’s tropical punch

now, the season sits different
it’s heavy in ways i can’t adjust for
fires for miles, no water to spare
wild winds making for epic dust storms

no one wanting to take responsibility
not wanting to sacrifice
watering dirt three times a day
with equal showers to look and feel nice

some say “it’s not like i created this mess”
ignoring science and other obvious signs
what good will it do to suffer through
i’m gonna take and use what’s mine

flora and fauna might pay the price
not to mention our own, the poor
but who really cares, none of them vote
their value fits in a junk drawer

as for fauna’s land, called wilderness
now it’s being sold to lay cement
the owners take the bones of the dead wildlife
to shoo the poor who can’t pay rent

this outlook is grim, it bleeds me of hope
so i immerse myself with nature’s kind
hugging the trees that rule the earth
while flowers write thoughts to my mind

i apologize to the bees, the trees
the birds, coyote, fish, the air
i send them as much love as I know how
from a heart that’s worse for wear

they reply by making my aches disappear
making me feel like i’m a child again
my magic comes back, lifts me up to the clouds
where i can see who will win in the end

so i continue to honor Mother Earth
striving for footprints as small as the bee
and hope I’m still here to see her victory
over those who laugh as she bleeds

i sit with the heat, knowing soon it will meet
the evil ones selling out one another
then i smile as i dream of nature thriving
in the comeback of magical summers

not yet

hope comes in many forms
it dies many deaths before it’s reborn
it sits through horror shows played in our heads
it treads the waters we cry for the dead
it carries a shovel in its rucksack
digs a defense against hopeless attacks
it orbits around our subconscious quirks
seen only at night if the geometry works
it insistently pulls us toward the light
where nature lives and color ignites
yet even as steadfast as hope may be
we reject its devotion because we can’t see
for when darkness hugs our very core
we sometimes believe there’s nothing more
until we decide to focus our sights
on nature’s hopes, both soft and bright
the tiniest creatures and flora are there
if just for a second, then off again somewhere
but put them together on memory’s canvas
a heart can’t help but feel hugs from the planet
even then, hope will hedge its bet
for it knows very well we may say “not yet”

i exist, therefore i grieve

i pray, to be alone
i think, alone equals safety
i hear, the noise that buries me
i feel, not sure but maybe

i remember, the tension in my chest
i react, by smiling not crying
i devour, to fill the empty space
i purge, for fear of dying

i see, the stranger in the mirror
i taste, the salt in her tears
i smell, the fears of her past
i get, the lines that appear

i doubt, the existence of happiness
i work, to forget my dreams
i crave, to know myself again
i concede, to posts and memes

i regret, friendships not made
i cherish, the few i have left
i heal, from the inside out
i start, with the hole in my chest

coyote crossing

as the call of the coyote makes its way
from water’s edge to the end of the plains
it takes with it my prayers and worries
up to the clouds where only wind hurries
it all comes back down as glimmering snow
like an autumn leaf, falling nice and slow
watching flakes land, then melt on new grass
suddenly it’s the now, no future, no past
and seeing new bison life cling to its mother
i wonder of mine as sun peaks from cloud cover
was it she or dad or god who read my mind
then carefully timed these wondrous finds
knowing how I love the wild and snow frosting
all three are to thank for coyote crossing
