Loving this Fall Weather!

october ballet

a visit to the garden on a cool october day
expectations of brown, black and grey
maybe a remnant of a seed not yet fallen
or one last visitor for a quick drink of pollen

as i admired many dried leaves of brown
i spotted a ballerina with a valerian crown
she whispered to follow her down below
where floral reefs opened their arms and glowed

like coral in a sea of green and blue shadows
they proudly stood for their sweet, short cameo
knowing their role for the next generation
meant being devoured by earth & vegetation

we pirouetted out of the tranquil sea
up to where sun and cone flowers still breathe
though short are their lives in starting so late
each act is lived with gratitude great

the valerian dancer then led me to see
stewards and visitors of the rooted keep
some who defend against nasty pests
others transporting new life for new guests

one passing through like a ghost in the night
creating a spectacle with pale green eyes
body floating under milky white sails
then disappearing, leaving no trail

i said my goodbyes to the dancers & actors
with one final question i needed to ask her
if my future finds me alone, in need
please could you dance once again for me

inner space connection for a spider & hypocrite

never did I imagine myself
with an interest in entomology
but after this brief encounter
i owe insects an apology

for a little American Grass Spider
invited me into its home
i stayed for only a moment
for fear of demolishing its form

it was decorated quite spectacularly
a seventies vibe indeed
with its upper deck quite alluring
great for guests with a pension for w**d

i took the tour then bid her farewell
as my crouch could not hold like her web
perhaps next year i’ll meet her daughter
we’ll smoke hash and I’ll call her Deb

we’ll talk about the midterms
how it matters for every living thing
never mind, i see a black widow coming
entomology, once again, is not for me

a juvenile & the old lady
the gifts of autumn

she goes every week to settle her heart
in a place that seems to know she’s coming
it rolls out a carpet on top of the lake
in colors of gold and green so stunning

it decides who should greet her at the front view
sometimes it’s bright colors with bees
other times it’s an eastern phoebe
saying welcome, don’t forget to hug a tree

sometimes it’s the sound of a little toad
or the thunderous noice of magpies
or the sight of white angelic egrets
against reflections of stormy skies

the lake then lures her onto one of its paths
as she ponders on the herons of the night
this late in September, when they don’t show
she assumes they’re on a southbound flight

her attention is turned towards the grass
where rabbit brush glow like molten gold
where wild turkey eat and monarchs feast
energizing their brilliant wings to unfold

then over the water she spots a landing site
and on it a feathered friend from the past
the juvenile heron of the night
an appearance that makes her heart gasp

why is the youngster still here all alone
not following the adults going south?
perhaps it’s a rebel, much like herself
ignoring the mainstream shouts

or maybe the lake whispered in its ear
stay here just a little while longer
keep the old lady company
until her heart is feeling much stronger

stronger to get her through winter’s cold
until spring is here once again
when we all can meet at the magic lake’s feet
and learn the love of nature’s plan

'Exactly 1 week earlier, I was delighted to have had the opportunity to witness this same (I think) coyote stalking prey through spring grasses. I was filled with gratitude, as it's not been easy for me to get close to this wildlife. Then to encounter it again in the spring snow, well, I truly felt blessed.'
