Still setting up the rest of the family when I glanced over and this three year old was already fully ready, big smile locked in like he'd been waiting on me the whole time. Had to drop everything and get the shot right then. Kids don't wait for you to catch up.

He had one hand stretched all the way out over the water, completely locked in on whatever he was about to drop, while his mom and dad knelt down on either side of him just watching it happen. Nobody was rushing him. Nobody was redirecting him toward the camera.

That kind of patience is its own kind of love, letting a two year old take his time with something as simple as a rock and a creek. Someday he won't remember this exact moment, but they will, and now they'll have it to look back on.

Here's something worth remembering before your next session: the stiff, everyone-look-at-me-and-smile portrait isn't actually what you want, even if it feels like the "real" one in the moment. What you want is your kid being your kid.

A two year old glancing over at his parents mid-laugh will mean more to you in ten years than a perfectly posed shot ever could. That's the version of him you'll actually remember, and the one he'd want to see too.

Let them wander, let them look away, let them be exactly as unpolished as two year olds are. You'll be glad you did.

Some of my favorite shots happen right after the "official" one, when someone says something ridiculous and the whole thing shifts. That's usually when the real moment shows up.

If your family could use an evening like that in tall grass and golden light, I have a few spots left this month, send me a message if you're ready to book.

That toddler walk where every step looks like it might be the last one before gravity wins, but he's fully committed anyway. Mom and dad clearly know something the rest of us don't, because they're just grinning like he's already won.

One year old, main character energy.

Instinctfully, every dad seems to lightly throw up their kids like this. The boy lost it laughing, the kind of laugh that comes from somewhere deep and doesn't stop until he's back down on solid ground.

That's the kind of trust that gets built before a kid even has words for it. Long before he can tell you he feels safe with his dad, he already knows it in his body, and moments like this are where it starts.

Become a Flare Family!

This season, I'm inviting a few CSRA families to do something a little different with me.

I'm looking for families in that specific stretch of life: parents with kids still young enough to complain about a photo session, but old enough to actually listen when you ask them to walk toward the light one more time. I want to spend an evening in the golden hour with you, in your favorite park or your own backyard, doing whatever your family actually does on a Tuesday.

In exchange, I'm asking for permission to share the images here and on my website. That's the whole trade.

If that sounds like your people, fill out the short application at the link below. I'll be choosing a small group over the next couple of weeks.

Who in your life needs to see this? Tag them.

There's a moment babies do around this age where they lean in for a hug you didn't ask for, and it catches you completely off guard every time. You can see it right there on her face.

What's a small moment with your kids that gets you every time, even after all these years?

There's a stretch right around one year old where he's still small enough to hold like this, but not for much longer. If you've got a little one at that age, or really any age, this is the kind of evening worth setting aside before it passes you by.

I have a few spots left this month, send me a message if you're ready to book.

Found this one digging through old sessions, back when one of them was still very much a kid and the other hadn't hit teenager yet. Half these shots are posed, half are just them cracking up at each other, and I still can't tell you which face is funnier, the tween's or the almost-teen barely holding it together next to her.

Wild to think they're both grown now. Watching siblings grow up through a camera lens hits different when you go back and find shots like this.
