“Did you cry”
No.
It never even occurred to me that that was an option. Not because I’m some kind of hardass(I am 😅) but because it needed to be done and it was much more important to me to show my girls that we can do hard things, that hair is just hair. It will grow back. These are all superficial, physical things that really don’t matter that much. I was so locked into being strong for them, my feelings were not mine, but theirs.

You see, my oldest, Brooke, had spent the 3 previous days brushing my hair out and sobbing as she pulled clump after clump out of my hair. She braided my hair every night to try and preserve as much as possible. I just needed to make it to our family pictures. June 1st.

The night of May 31st I had the most intense night sweats. I changed my clothes 3 times and my hair was soaked with sweat when I woke up. June 1st was here. Family picture day. I had waited until it had been over 6 years and had a cancer diagnosis before I finally booked my own family pictures. That morning my natural reaction was that I needed to jump in the shower and maybe if I washed my hair, that would help. Yea, don’t do that. It turned into 1 big dreadlock. I looked at the time 9:34am, I woke brooke up, grabbed some clippers and some scissors and headed towards the dining room table. We were shaving it now. I didn’t have time for this, I had a target pick up order for some press on nails that I needed for our shoot. The nails were a must, the hair, not so much.😅

My youngest daughter didn’t take it as well. At 9 years old I tried to prepare her by showing her some women with no hair, with a headscarf or bandana on and to explain to her that that’s what I was going to look like. She was absolutely appalled. And then the day of the shaving came. She was maddd, big mad. She yelled at me from the living room because she refused to even look at me and see what was going on. “YOU ARE GOING TO LOOK SO UGLY” she yelled at me. All I could say was “I’m sorry”. I knew she wasn’t trying to be hurtful, and what hurt me wasn’t the fact that she thought I was going to look ugly, but it gutted me that she was going to have the bald mom. The sick, bald, cancer mom.

As brooke and I started to chip away at the dread lock and I was to a point where I resembled Angelica from Rugrats, Finley appeared in the dining room. She was warming up to it, and even took her turn to take a few swipes with the clippers.
This wasn’t some well thought out get together, or super symbolic party. I’ve seen people do some really cool things with friends and family when that time comes to get the big chop. But it was us. A little unhinged, completely chaotic, and a whole lotta laughs.

In the midst of it all I grabbed my camera, gave it to the girls, and said “we gotta document this”.

And that we did.

Today I'm grateful for sunsets and little blue-eyed Emmy's 🤎

Embarrassingly I was teary-eyed on my way home from this session. It had been a long time since I had been out in the sunset shooting with my clients and it is something that brings me SO much joy, that without it, I was feeling pretty down. Physically I was having a good day, the weather was perfect, the sun was setting just right, I got to see some of my favorite girls, and Emmy was all smiles. I drove home with the windows down just knowing that that void I had been feeling for the last couple months was instantly filled. I truthfully can not wait until I am 100% and can have that feeling 4 times a week again 🥹

Quite possibly the sweetest family and easiest newborn ever. I don't think he made a peep one time. And that round little face 🥹
Thank you so much to all the clients that booked before my diagnosis and that have been so understanding and accommodating to me during this time. It has made this not so great thing a little easier 🤎

10 minutes before their session I get a call "hey Breein, we are here, but they are having a full hippie fest at this location" ☠️☠️☠️
Offffffff course they are 🤣
Ok, we need to pivot.
The sun is setting and I have to think fast, I send them to my road where there is an abandon house with some overgrown yard.
Tadah! Magic ✨
Let's not forget I almost passed out talking to them after the session (don't worry, I was still in the throws of the hard stuff {A/C chemo} I'm doing better now)
They even sent me home with the sweetest Get Well gift! I'm just so thankful for such loyal clients that will go with the punches🤎

Though I'm not taking any new sessions right now, due to my chemo treatment (I hope this changes in the near future), I have been able to still fulfill the sessions (except 1 due to my shingles 🫣) that had already been scheduled before my cancer diagnosis.
I miss sharing my work.
So be nice to me and lets act like everything is normal like the 'ol days.
No big deal here, just Breein sharing her beautiful clients photos 🤣

42 days ago I was diagnosed with cancer, and though I promise not to make this page about that, I did want to offer an update.

First off, I met the big mouse, and we had a good talk 🤎 I am grateful I was able to enjoy a week at Disney with my family before coming back to reality. And reality was just that, after coming home on a Sunday, the next day I had chemo class, the next day I had my port put in, the next day I had my first infusion and a week after that I had my first chemo infusion. I have 18 more weeks of chemo, followed by surgery, and then radiation to seal the deal. Chemo has not been super great to me, but I’m grateful it hasn’t been worse. Tomorrow is my second chemo treatment and I’d be lying if I told you I wasn’t contemplating running away 😅 But hey, we are gonna do the damn thing and hope we have a better go around this session. As far as working and taking sessions, I’m still unsure and waiting to fall into some type of schedule that’s more reliable on how I’m feeling. I want to thank everyone that has text, called, sent packages and gifts, and food, we are overwhelmed with gratitude 🤗

I’ve went back and forth on if I wanted to make a post about this or not. The finality of a post makes me a little uncomfy but I feel like transparency during this time is helping me, and possibly you. I made a very lengthy, often rambling Instagram story last week explaining some of this.

Last Wednesday I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Triple negative invasive ductal carcinoma.

Yea. Wild right? You are just as surprised as I am, believe me. I met with a surgeon today and it looks like chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation are in my future. I will be undergoing 12 weeks of chemotherapy after I get my port placed in a couple weeks. I don’t know what this time will look like for me as it is so different for everyone, but I’m telling you guys for a couple reason. One, I don’t know how I’m going to feel, maybe I’ll be really sick, maybe I’ll be really okay, but chances are things will need to slow down for me. I’m not sure what I can or cannot take on right now and it feels like I should be transparent about that. Two, it feels important to me to use this platform to tell someone my story and what road I’m going down in hopes it could comfort someone along the way.

I will say one thing, I’m going to Disney world on Sunday to see the big mouse and am going to live up our family vacation that we’ve been planning for over a year. I’m so grateful that I’m able to go do this before treatment starts. Alright, so now let’s kick cancers ass 🤎
