The Greenfield Public Library is pleased to announce that it has received a Historic Resource Development Grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa. Grant funds will support Adair County newspaper microfilming. The Greenfield Public Library will microfilm the Adair County Free Press, 2022-2024, and Fontanelle Observer, 1933, 1941-1948, 1950, and 2005-2023, to preserve the materials for future use and give in library access to materials.

Funding for the Historic Resource Development Program is made possible by the Iowa Legislature’s annual appropriation to the Resource Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program.

July 1 - July 2nd, 1958:

Heavy rain fell overnight from July 1st through the 2nd, with the highest amounts reported in Shelby, Audubon, and Guthrie counties in Iowa. Four-day rainfall amounts in these counties included 7.62 inches at Harlan, 8.96 inches at Guthrie Center, and 15.14 inches at Audubon, while rainfall amounts just in the 24 hours ending on July 2nd were 6.72 inches at Harlan, 6.55 inches at Guthrie Center, and a remarkable 12.53 inches at Audubon. These very heavy rains resulted in widespread flooding and flash flooding across the area. In the Exira area in southern Audubon County, the East Nishnabotna River flooded, destroying 75 homes and nearly 20 businesses with the loss of 19 lives.

Cass-Adair County, IA F5 – June 27, 1953!

Four farms were demolished as this violent tornado moved through the countryside. At one farm near the county line, virtually nothing remained. Heavy machinery was thrown more than 100 yards, boards were driven into trees, and livestock losses were substantial.

Mrs. Walter McMurphy, 56, was killed when her farmhouse was destroyed. Her husband was critically injured, while LeRoy Betts was hurt after another home was lifted, turned, and smashed.

4 hours of driving this morning to pick up a few more high-quality VCRs.

It might look like a pile of old electronics to most people, but to me it's investing in faster turnaround times, better reliability, and preserving more family memories.

If you're not growing, you're dying. Onward and upward!

Take a look at how far Atlantic has come! 🤯

These satellite images compare our community in the 1930s to 2025, and the transformation is incredible. It's amazing to see how neighborhoods, roads, and businesses have grown over the decades.

But beyond the buildings and streets, think about all the lives that have unfolded here. The blood, sweat, and tears that built this community. The birthdays, graduations, weddings, Christmases, family dinners, and everyday moments that have filled these homes.

Think of all the people we've lost, and all the new faces who now call Atlantic home and continue to shape what this town is today.

Every street has a story. Every home has a history.

Kids today will never know the disappointment of driving to the video store, finding the movie you wanted, and discovering all the copies were already rented out.

Somehow that was still more satisfying than scrolling Netflix for 20 minutes.
