Alliance Gallery is pleased to announce its second Regional Juried Show Maximalism! featuring artists from the DC Metro Area.
We asked artists to submit works that invoke themes including but not limited to excess, abundance, bold visual or emotional expression, indulgence, or sensory overload. In contrast to minimalism’s quiet restraint, Maximalism! embraces rich design elements such as ornamentation, texture, color, and attention to detail.

This year’s application pool was more competitive than ever with 321 submission of artwork! Alliance Gallery will showcase 41 pieces selected by the exhibition’s juror Abbey Alison McClain.

About the juror: Abbey Alison McClain is a DC-based arts professional and travel enthusiast. She serves as the Executive Director of Touchstone Gallery and Touchstone Foundation for the Arts. She is also the founder and managing director of Art Roving, where she has led and organized initiatives such as the Art Roving Studio Residency, Playhaus Community Supported Art initiative, and curation of Hotel Nell (formerly Selina Union Market).

Among her current projects, Abbey is the lead curator and co-founder of the Q***r Art Salon, an annual initiative that received a 2025 Arts Exhibition Grant from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities. She also curated the 2025 Land Form exhibition for the Delaware Contemporary’s ArtSource Radius Invitational, and has served as a program site supervisor for the Bloomberg Arts Internship since 2022.

She is an active leader in the DC visual arts community and a frequent contributor and advisor on arts programming.

Opening Reception: Thursday, September 4, 5-7pm
On View: September 4 - October 12, 2025

Address: 2700 Clarendon Blvd, Suite 330R, Arlington, VA, 22201 in the breezeway between SoulCyle and Chip City

Part of the way I'm processing grief is through art. This mini set is about friendship loss. I've had friendships fade, become imbalanced, and die. There are some people who I thought would be around forever, and some people I thought would be there during my toughest moments. Friendship and community has been heavy on my mind, especially during these times.

I used a dead bouquet of yellow roses (the flower of friendship) and dead monstera leaves. The photos are meant to be moody and out of focus to evoke the emotions that come with the decline and/or end of friendships.

I'm seeing it more, but I wish we were able to treat platonic relationships like we do romantic ones because the breakups can be just as hard or even harder to process.

I'd love to know what you think. Does a particular photo stand out? How do you process the breakup of a friendship?

Thanks for reading and viewing.
