Blue Dasher on the Point

Balanced on the very tip of a blade of grass, wings spread wide against pure black — this male Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) is caught mid-transformation, his abdomen just starting to frost into that signature powder blue. Look closely and you can see the amber wash at the base of each wing and those incredible turquoise eyes catching the light. One of the most common dragonflies in North America, but every time I find one holding still like this, it feels anything but ordinary. 🐉✨

Sculpted by Time: Golden Light Over the Badlands

Millions of years of wind and water sculpted this. Late afternoon light rakes across the eroded spires of the Badlands, catching every ridge in gold while the canyons fall into shadow — a landscape shaped by nothing but time and erosion. Shot in June of 2022.

There's something almost magical about finding a bloom like this — soft yellow petals unfurling against the dark stillness of the pond, holding onto every bit of light they can catch. Water lilies never stay open for long, so catching one at just the right moment always feels like a small gift.

🌑✨ Out of the Shadows ✨🌑

Sometimes the best light is the light you don't expect. These two blue dragonflies landed on the same golden reed, and the way the sun caught them against the dark background stopped me in my tracks — it almost looks staged, but this is exactly how the scene unfolded. Every vein in their wings, every facet of their eyes, lit up like they were on a spotlighted stage.

Nature doesn't need help with drama — sometimes you just have to be there at the right moment.

🪰✨ Wings of Glass ✨🪰

There's something almost otherworldly about a dragonfly up close — those wings look like they're made of stained glass, every vein catching the light. This blue dasher paused just long enough on the edge of a leaf for me to capture the detail: the deep sapphire of its body, the dark glassy eyes, and wings so fine you can see straight through them.

Macro photography like this is a reminder to slow down and look closer — there's a whole world of tiny wonders right in the backyard.
