The painted faces is a form of visual storytelling, from which, viewers will be able to differentiate characters. Every color carries a meaning and the patterns represent moral alignment and social status. It helps to bring the audience into the story that’s unfolding onstage.

Colours that Light up behind the scenes…

We were extremely blessed by a great sunset when we visited the backstage of Xin Xin Rong He Teochew Opera troupe.

As the light from the setting sun streams into the backstage area through a ventilation gap, it glistens anyone in its path.

I took full advantage of the rare opportunity and it didn’t disappoint 😊

The amount time needed to get make up done and get dressed for a show is almost as long as the show itself. They would first layer the basic foundation and slowly apply the colours and define the edges of the lines on their faces. It’s an intricate process as they apply each stroke of paint to get them into character.

It was an unexpected turn of events!

When we were on the boat to Ubin, the skies were filled with clouds, the mood was dull and light was flat. As the evening approached, the clouds cleared and a ray of sunlight shone into the backstage with many opportunities for impactful photos (which I will share in upcoming posts) but the night ended with a spectacular colours that filled the sky! I was truly overjoyed with the weather we were blessed with that evening!

Truly, our last kampong…

One of the things I love about Pulau Ubin is the tranquil sight of what Singapore would look like in the 1940s. The 15min bum boat ride seems like a Time Machine to go back in time.

A fish in the mouth is worth parading…

There is this particular tern who flew around the rocks 3-4 times showing off his catch to the other birds, which was good for us who had multiple attempts to capture it.

Above the waters off Changi, the Black-naped Terns (Sterna sumatrana) move like acrobats in the sky. Twisting, diving, and gliding effortlessly through the coastal winds, these elegant seabirds turn the shoreline into an aerial performance.

Against the backdrop of cargo ships and passing aircraft, they continue a timeless rhythm — hunting fish, calling to one another, and nesting on the rocky islets around Singapore’s coast.

In a city constantly moving at full speed, watching these terns dance through the air feels like a rare moment of freedom and grace in the wild.

Just off the coast of Changi Beach, a quiet seasonal visitor returns to Singapore’s shores. Terns — elegant seabirds known for their long migrations and graceful dives — use Singapore as an important stopover and nesting ground along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway.

Against the backdrop of planes overhead and ships crossing the horizon, these birds continue an ancient journey that predates the city itself. Along the rocky coastlines and offshore islets, they rest, feed, and raise their young in a fragile balance beside one of the world’s busiest urban environments.

A reminder that even within modern Singapore, nature still finds space to survive.
