What makes a portrait finer?
Over the years, my work has evolved, but my lighting style has changed very little. So has the way I retouch my portraits. There were moments I wondered if I should follow the trends of the time. Yet my clients kept returning, asking for the very same look.
Over time, I realised there is a group of people who simply value the same things I do. They appreciate beautiful lighting and fine-art prints, of course. But if anything, I think it’s the understated nature of my work that they seem most drawn to.
So what makes a portrait finer?
To me, it’s understanding that a great portrait doesn’t always try to be more than it needs to be. There’s a person in front of me, and my role isn’t to add more. It’s to remove everything that distracts from who they are.
You’ll rarely see loud accessories or luxury watches in my portraits. Not because my clients don’t have them, but because they’re seldom what deserves our attention. I’d much rather you notice the person before you notice the photograph. A face that reflects a life that’s been lived. That’s the standard I hope every portrait bearing the EJUNLOW® name continues to uphold.
Perhaps that’s what a finer portrait has always been.
