As part of a mentorship program in film organised by Back Beat Bolaget in Sandviken to support young talent and equip them with experience of producing a film - this culminated with actually filming the story this past weekend. Students of the mentorship program worked with director Lars Vega. Lennart Jähkel and Jonas Lawes were cast for the main roles. SVT (Swedish national TV) visited our production.

Ett tiotal filmintresserade ungdomar har under våren jobbat tillsammans med regissören Lars Vega för att producera en kortfilm. I helgen var det inspelning i Sandviken. Länk i kommentarerna 👇

There is something very inspiring about filming on celluloid, not to mention liberating. We were filming a scene for an upcoming project to test look/feel in relation to a specific part of the dialogue. The camera we used is a bare bones 50 year old Arriflex SR1 16mm without videotap or any other accessories. What strikes me is how working like this forces intuition paired with imagination and a light meter to visualise the shot on the fly. In my instagram post I wrote the headline “accidentally passionately” and I believe the source of this stems from a play with words, an oxymoron perhaps.

Limitations have always been an important component in my work as it challenges the methodology as well as outcome in positive ways - forcing creativity and trust in the process. As it also removes the idea of immediacy, including of what is seen through the viewfinder only being a gauge of composition. In this way of working there can absolutely be surprises, happy accidents (and bad ones too!) but more than anything - the very core of passionate craftsmanship where people come together to tell stories.

A colleague reached out to me and asked if the ARRI Alexa 35 is suitable for low light filming. From the projects I've worked on I instinctively said yes but also considered that there might be a more elaborate answer to this. Prompted by curiosity I set up a test in which I explore how highlights and shadows are distributed across the 17 stops of dynamic range while maintaining the same amount of light hitting the sensor. The test includes stills, waveforms, creative methods related to intention and of course - conclusions. This is the first article in a series I intend to publish where I bring up creative and technical questions and share experiences working as a cinematographer.

This has been a fantastic week filled with inspiration, admiration and new relationships formed. I am profoundly touched on a deep level by the conversations i have listened to and participated in.

Perhaps the strongest impression is the sharing of creative energies, the inclusion and support of everyone and the passion for this art form.

Thank you so much and I will hopefully see you next year.
