The Chapel of Bones in Évora was built in the 16th century and is part of the Church of São Francisco. As the city’s cemeteries ran out of space, the friars gathered the remains of the dead and incorporated them into the chapel’s walls, creating the extraordinary space we see today.

This series of digital black-and-white photographs explores the relationship between bones, stone, and architecture within the chapel’s subdued light. Stripped of color, the bones become more than symbols of death; they become traces left behind by time.

In this centuries-old space, life and death, memory and forgetting quietly overlap. The camera does not simply record bones, but reflects on our own existence in the face of mortality.

In Évora, the bones were not hidden. They were left behind, allowing time to continue speaking through them.
