Whakapapa pre-ski season. Late June, and barely any snow! Was kinda expecting a winter wonderland but it wasn’t to be for my first trip up the sky waka. My camera hasn’t been out much lately… feeling rather uninspired and lacking creativity.

Check out this beaut rainbow! This was captured on the Matariki public holiday - no sign of the Matariki constellation due to clouds (I assume… I wasn’t up at 5:30am to check, the forecast wasn’t looking good!) but when I opened my curtains at a more civil hour, I found this!

Shot on iphone 14 pro.

Mānawatia a Matariki! Matariki marks the reappearance of the Matariki constellation (Pleiades) in Aotearoa’s skies, signifiying the Māori new year. It is a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and and plan for the future.

Wellington’s weather wasn’t conducive to photographing Matariki this weekend just gone (it’s visible just before dawn) but we did get a cracking clear night on Sunday!

This is taken at Kaitoke regional park Greater Wellington

Thanks for the invite Janelle Douglas - it sure was looking dicey there for a minute, but you had faith all along that the clouds would part!

**25% off in July 2026** Matariki is a special time to reflect on those who have passed, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. In the midst of busy lives, it’s also a chance to slow down, reconnect, and simply pause.

Perched high above Tora beach, facing east, The Last Resort is perfectly positioned to watch the Matariki star cluster rise just before the morning sun — and we feel incredibly lucky to share it.

To celebrate Matariki, we’re offering 25% off our standard rates throughout July. If you’d rather skip the walk in, we’ll transfer you in our CanAm vehicles free of charge (usually $50pp!).*

Stay for 1 or 2 nights and enjoy:

🌟Gorgeous walk/bike/horse trek through farmland and native bush
🌟Fully equipped kitchen
🌟Food & luggage transfers
🌟Large dining room with cosy wood burner
🌟Comfy bedrooms sleeping up to 8 & modern bathrooms
🌟Hot showers & power
🌟Outdoor hot tub under the stars
🐾Behaved dogs welcome

Watch Matariki rise from our hilltop seat with a cup of tea, soak in the hot tub beneath the stars, or simply open the shutters from bed and take it all in. Listen to the sounds of the local nocturnal wildlife as the Māori New Year begins.

If you’ve not seen Matariki before, Te Papa has a wonderful guide on how to find the star cluster, you can also learn more at www.matariki.com

*25% off standard rates, and free transfer on our CanAm apply for bookings for the month of July 2026 only. For full Terms & Conditions visit our website.

A huge thank you to for this stunning photo of the night sky from The Last Resort, now that's special!

First astro shot of the season! A little late getting started this year, nights are cold, I’m getting old, work and study have been sucking the soul from me…

But, I never regret a moment under the stars with my camera. Even if the results are mediocre 😆

Taken at Fort Dorset/Oruaiti Reserve. Thanks for encouraging me to come out Janelle Douglas!

Slowly working away at a few other captures during the Photographic Society of New Zealand national convention in Rotorua!

I had a few hours before my flight home to wander the city, so popped across to the lakefront gardens and boardwalk near the Novotel to follow the suggested photowalk (thanks Ann Hunn!). There were some lovely autumn colours and occasionly, some delicious light!
