The last light at Muriwai… 🌅

Looking out across Muriwai Beach as another day disappears over the Tasman Sea.

I rather liked the little figures walking across that enormous expanse of sand — just enough to give a sense of scale to the landscape.

Well, this made me stop the van… 😃

Heading towards Rotorua this morning and the wind was absolutely howling across the hills. When I spotted it catching the waterfall and literally blowing the water sideways, there was no way I was driving past without getting the camera out.

Rather spectacular conditions — although considerably less pleasant standing out there taking the photo! 😂

Well… I had to try it! 🌌📷

Not exactly ideal astrophotography conditions tonight — very windy, with clouds racing across the sky — but they opened up for just long enough to give the new lens its first proper test.

A 30-second exposure looking towards the tail end of the Milky Way… with the van modelling out front. 🚐✨

This is literally my first photograph with the RF 15–35mm f/2.8L — replacing a lens design I’ve been using that dates all the way back to 2001. Nearly two decades of Canon lens development separate the two, so I’m rather looking forward to seeing what this one can do under a properly dark, clear sky. 😁

Somewhere on the road, New Zealand. 🇳🇿

Not a mountain, not a Milky Way and not even an emergency beer delivery this Saturday morning…

Just a very happy Labrador who was kind enough to sit still for a photograph.

I rather like this one - the wet concrete, the low viewpoint, the lovely light and, of course, that gorgeous face.

Sometimes you don’t have to travel very far or wait for an extraordinary landscape. You just need an interesting subject in front of the camera.

Happy Saturday - have a fun weekend folks! 🐾🥳

One last Auckland sunset… 🌇🧡

Well, this seems a rather fitting photograph to finish my Auckland stay with.

Looking across the water towards the city last evening, with the Sky Tower poking through beneath an absolutely spectacular golden sky.

I went out hoping the clouds might give me something interesting at sunset — and for a few wonderful minutes, they certainly did. Sometimes it’s worth just being there, camera in hand and waiting to see what happens. 📷

Thanks Auckland, it’s been great! By the time you see this, I’ll be heading South and onto the next part of the adventure. 🚐

The ‘young’ Kiwi Photographer is off on new adventures — check in soon to see where I end up next! 😄

* Definition of ‘young’ may vary considerably depending upon the observer. 😂

Sometimes the person in the landscape makes the photograph… 🌊

Taking in the view from Strongman Mine Memorial lookout on the West Coast.

I liked the scale here — one person standing above that huge sweep of rugged coastline, with the sea and those distinctive offshore rocks stretching away into the distance.

A view across Edinburgh from the Salisbury Crags… 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿📷

Looking north across the city on a beautiful summer’s day, with the great wall of the Crags dominating the foreground and Edinburgh stretching away towards the Firth of Forth.

And if you look carefully towards the bottom left, there’s even one of Edinburgh’s green double-decker buses making its way along Queen’s Drive — which gives you some idea of just how enormous those cliffs actually are! 🚌😳

One of the things I always loved about Edinburgh was how dramatically the landscape and the city collide. You can be right in the middle of the capital and, a short walk later, find yourself looking down on it from somewhere like this.

Not a bad view from the Crags. 😊

Things get a little bit different when Steampunk comes to Thames… 🎩⚙️😎

One from the wonderfully colourful Steampunk Festival in Thames — where wandering around town with a camera tends to produce some rather interesting characters!

These two certainly weren’t going to disappear into the crowd. I loved the outfits, the hats, the colour — and couldn’t resist positioning them just beyond that enormous SLOW painted across the road. 😄

Definitely one of those occasions where people-watching is every bit as entertaining as the photography.

Have you ever been along to the Thames Steampunk Festival?

Arapuni and the Waikato River… 💦

A view across the hydro structures and Waikato River at Arapuni — one of those places where engineering and the surrounding landscape make an interesting combination photographically.

Well… there it is. Post number 1,000 on Kiwi Photographer. 🥳📷

Rather appropriate that this one has a few things going on — Auckland’s Sky Tower reflected in the glass, the Moon hanging above it and the Sun's reflection just sneaking in at the bottom-left corner. 🌙☀️

One thousand posts. That’s an awful lot of photographs, places, early mornings, late nights and adventures along the way — and considerably more than I ever imagined when I started this page.

Thank you, as always, to everyone who follows, comments, shares, reacts or simply enjoys seeing the photographs appear in their feed. It really is appreciated. 🤗

And one final thought today, with the sad news of Dolly Parton’s passing yesterday. An extraordinary life — not only a remarkable entertainer, but a formidable businesswoman and someone who used her success to do an enormous amount of good for other people.

Rest in peace, Dolly. ❤️
