Specialising in B&W as well as C-41, we use top of range processors and scanners at their optimum to ensure the highest quality results are achieved every time. In a world where you can take hundreds of photos in a matter of seconds, film photography is an extremely exciting and rewarding way to capture simple moments in everyday life, right up to creating beautiful work for publication and exhibition. As the industry slowly ceased to evolve due to lack of interest many years ago, the price to shoot film has increased whilst the knowledge and technical understanding involved in the industry has slowly decreased. For this reason we aim to retain this precious knowledge by helping to educate others and most importantly, keep our prices reasonable so that it can still be affordable to shoot on a format we all love.

There’s something great about seeing a whole roll of film together. Our Digital Contact Sheets include the full roll and borders around each frame, with loads of detail so you can crop into individual images later.

These photographs by Axel Gutierrez Pino were taken in Santiago, Chile, during the 2019 social uprising. Axel travelled with his Nikon FM2 and Kodak UltraMax 400 film, capturing the demonstrations as they unfolded. Previously, he’d scanned individual photos, but this time he chose a Digital Contach Sheet because he wanted to see them all together - another way to look at the work and make sure he wasn’t overlooking anything.

Contact sheets have long been an important part of the editing process. If you like the aesthetic, want full borders, or want a bit more flexibility from your scans, they’re worth a try.

Just let the team know when you drop off your film or select Digital Contact Sheet on the order form if you’re posting it or using a drop-off point. We can also make contact sheets from existing negatives stored at the lab.

Choose from ‘Introduction to B&W Printing’ or ‘Introduction to Colour Printing’.

Artist Lisa Benson spent a few days this week in our colour darkroom making these massive hand prints. Using 120 film shot with Lisa’s pinhole camera, the negative was exposed onto 6” wide expired Kodak Lustre paper. To print an entire roll, Lisa slowly moved the film through the enlarger carrier while simultaneously spooling the paper along the baseboard, creating continuous prints ranging from 5 to 8 metres long. We think they look pretty amazing!

The prints will be on show as part of ‘Stellar Garden’, opening next Friday, 28 August from 4pm at Ramp Gallery in Hamilton

Harman Switch Azure 💙

Now available at The Black and White Box, Harman Switch Azure 125 is an experimental film with its colour channels deliberately swapped around. Blue light lands in the red channel and red lands in the blue, creating some unexpected hues: blues turn orange, yellows become vivid azure, and reds shift through purple.

These examples by Anen Di Anen were shot on a Mamiya RB67 ProS, using Azure for the first time. She chose a sunny afternoon, soft light and colourful locations to really lean into the film’s unusual colour shifts, creating images that feel almost like everything in the frame is glowing.

It runs through our standard C-41 process, too. Just let us know it’s Azure when you send it in and we’ll scan it to keep the colour shift rather than neutralising it.

We're thrilled to share that dip and dunk film processing is now part of the lab.

The Kreonite KPL-72 develops C-41 colour negative film without any rollers touching the emulsion. Your film is suspended from a rack and lowered into the chemistry, with nitrogen bubbles keeping development even across every frame. It's the gold standard in film processing, and the most consistent way to develop your film.

Looking after dip and dunk processing is Jason, who also runs our C-Type printing. He's been running these processors for thirty years, and it shows in every roll. Dip and dunk is the most careful way we know to process film, and it's why we've built our lab around it

We process everything from 35mm to 8x10 sheet film, with scan options to suit every job.
