I know it's only September, but if there's one thing about Christmas, it sneaks up faster than you think. One minute it's spring, next minute you're scrambling for gifts and wondering where the year went.

So I'm getting ahead of it this year. Christmas Mini Sessions are happening again at Accent Photography, shooting early November, which means plenty of time to get prints sorted for those family and grandparents gifts.

I've opened up a private Facebook group for anyone who wants first access before it goes public. Here's what being in the group gets you.

You'll have a say in what the set actually looks like, since I'm putting it to a vote before anything's built. You'll get the booking link before anyone outside the group does. And as one of our VIPs, if you book in the 24 hour window before it goes live to the public, you'll get an extra free digital file added to your gallery, plus first pick of session times before they get snapped up.

This is what I mean when I tell parents to bring a change of clothes.

These cousins were mid game, fully clothed, absolutely soaked, and having the time of their lives. Nobody posed for this. Nobody was told to smile. It just happened, because that's what happens when you let kids actually play instead of asking them to stand still and look at a camera.

This is exactly how I run my sessions. Less "everyone look this way," more "go do your thing and I'll capture it." It means the odd wet sock and a load of washing afterwards, but it also means photos that actually feel like your family, not a stiff, staged version of it.

So yes, if you're booking a family session with me, bring a spare set of clothes. You're probably going to need it.

A myth I hear a lot: "We missed the newborn window, it has to be done in the first two weeks."
It doesn't.

Yes, that early sleepy, curled up newborn stage is gorgeous, and if we can get in during those first couple of weeks, that's ideal. But babies aren't on a deadline, and neither are you. If life got in the way, feeding's still settling, you're not sleeping, or you just weren't ready, that's completely normal, and your session doesn't need to be cancelled because of it.

This little guy was 7 weeks old at his session, and we still got the most beautiful images of him. Not a lesser version of newborn photos, just a different one.

So if you've been putting off booking because you think you've missed your chance, you haven't. Get in touch and we'll figure out what works for you and bub.

Some people take a little time to warm up to the idea of having their photo taken.

Debra was one of those people.

When she and her partner booked me to photograph their wedding, she told me straight up, she'd never felt comfortable in front of the camera. But by the end of that day, she was relaxed, smiling, and absolutely glowing in her photos.

So when she joined one of my Social Shoots a while later, it felt like a full circle moment. And honestly, she nailed it. Her images are confident, warm, and so full of personality. She's now using them proudly in her business marketing, and it's been so cool to see her out there showing up.

Here's what she said after her shoot:

"You've turned something that used to make me uncomfortable into something I actually enjoyed. From start to finish, you made the whole experience feel relaxed, stress-free, and genuinely fun."

I reckon stories like Debra's are a good reminder, you don't need to love the camera to get great photos. You just need a relaxed, supportive space, a bit of guidance, and someone who gets how awkward it can feel at first.

One of the most common things I see with small business owners is a set of branding photos that are all headshots and nothing else.

A headshot is great, but it only tells people what you look like. It doesn't show what you do, how you work, what a day in your business actually looks like, or any sense of who you are beyond a polished smile at the camera.

The photos that actually build trust are the ones that show you in action, working, creating, laughing mid conversation, hands busy with whatever it is you do. That's what makes people feel like they know you before they've even worked with you.

If your photo library is all headshots, it might be time to fill in the gaps.

You roll up not really knowing what to expect, and by lunch you're chatting away with a group of women you met three hours ago like you've known them for years.

There's hair and makeup happening in one corner, someone laughing at their own photo on the back of the camera, someone else raiding the snack table between locations. It doesn't feel like work, and it definitely doesn't feel like a photoshoot in the way people usually imagine one.

You move through a few different spots across the day, showhome, cafe, a bit of nature, a bit of city, and somewhere in the middle of it all you stop thinking about the camera completely.

That's the bit people don't expect. Not the photos. The day itself.
