Mike and I sneaked off to Ōkārito for a few days and finally got to do the Callery Gorge walk in Franz Josef - last time we tried to do it, the track was closed due to a slip. It's a really pretty, undulating 40 minute walk through bush which brings you out to a suspension bridge over the most stunning turquoise water. A real hidden gem!

I took a welcome break from the winter/spring garden tidy up to finally knuckle down and have a go at a few more images from our trip to Sumba Island, Indonesia. As well as a more 'traditional' edit I knew that I also wanted to try something a little more 'artsy' on the 'dancing trees' that Sumba is known for, and was a big reason for our going on the trip in the first place. The location was one of the more challenging of the trip due to the number of variables - light; wind; tide; other tourists; local childern. But it was also one of the most enjoyable (who doesn't like standing up to their shorts in the sea taking photos of small trees?😆)

This was the moment on our wild, wet & windy trip over on the West Coast, that my feet got very wet!! Mike was sensibly standing further up the beach. We had already been drenched the day before by an enormous rogue wave at Punakaiki Rocks _ Mike managed to duck but I was still shooting and didn't realise it was coming quite so close to us! I got a shot of the wave hitting my camera lens but then had to make hasty retreat to wash the salt water off my camera. Such is life when photographing on the wonderfully unpredictable West Coast of the South Island!

Mike & I spent a couple of nights at Mount Cook and walked part of the Ho**er Valley Track to experience the new suspension bridge (now NZ’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge). We couldn’t believe how busy the track was considering it’s the middle of Winter! This photo was taken from the first bridge looking across towards Mount Sefton.

On our last trip away in the Moho, we managed one precious night at Lake Camp before we had to head back to help look after our sick daughter and grandson in Christchurch! Sadly, the sunrise this time had very little colour but the reflections were spectacular. This location seems to put on a show every time we visit and each time is so different. Definitely worth getting out of bed for on a cold Winter's morning!

Taking a break from our Sumba images, here's a shot from our recent very brief trip down to Mount Cook. Heather and I have visited Tasman Lake a couple of times before but there had been very little ice to make for an interesting foreground. This time there was almost too much ice. Be careful what you wish for!

Another from Sumba Island. Heather and I were sitting in the sand, shoulder to shoulder, watching the sun go down. A romantic moment or were we both trying to get the best angle down the centre of the gap in the rocks? 😆

Another Sumba location that Heather and I wish we could keep going back to. So many photo opportunities with the changing tide and light. Through the hole in the rock was another world of amazing twisted rock formations.

When planning a photography trip Heather and I mostly enjoy doing our own research and making our own itinerary. For Sumba Island, Indonesia we are so glad that we gave this responsibility to Australian Photographer Wendy Klein and her wonderful driver Ferbando. Their combined knowledge meant that we visited some wonderful, if remote, locations and people. It's impossible to select a favourite photo spot on the island (they were all so different), but this was certainly one of the most memorable - access was difficult - down very narrow unformed tracks in a 4 wheel drive, in the dark. But the location, with the amazing sea stacks, was breathtaking. The coffee and breakfast on the beach afterwards was icing on the cake.
