Capturing the fishing boats crossing the Grey Bar is a bit of a sideline interest which I also enjoy. My name is Ann Knipe and Photography is my hobby. Three stories from me today.
My first stop was to the slipway where the FV Progress was heading into the big shed for some maintenance and a clean.
The next stop was down to the Blaketown tiphead to see the FV Galatea provide some assistance to the Factory Ship Aukaha hove to just off the Bar, and return to port.
Soon after the FV Moonshadow ll headed down a very muddy river and over the Bar hitting a few waves in the process.

Conditions can change rather quickly on the Grey Bar. Here we are today less than 24 hours since Resolution came in.
Today the boats are all tied up, it is blowing a strong southwesterly at the river mouth, and the Grey River is in flood.
On a positive note - the crew's get a break, and the flood will clean the gravel and sand out of the front of the bar.
Sorry for the shake in the video - it was the wind.

Well the beautiful weather that we have been experiencing over the last week is now behind us and today Weather Warnings for the Coast are in place.
I headed down to check out the sea conditions at the tiphead this afternoon as large waves have been forecast - mainly for tomorrow.
I had been following the FV Resolution on the Tracker and at roughly 2.30pm she appeared out of the gloom, just as the rain began.
They had a smooth trip over the bar. I did later note that an hour later they came back out and headed north.

The weather is perfect for the Trailer Boats, often called Fizz boats, to head out to the Hokitika Trench after the magnificent blue fin tuna.
If you are heading into Cobden at the moment you can see that the freedom camping site is currently full with these boats.
While I was waiting for the FV's Corsair and Redemption to cross the Grey Bar this afternoon I snapped a couple of the Fizz Boats heading back in.
The forecast is not to good for the next few days so I am guessing that they will soon be heading back home.

Some Grey Bar activity late afternoon (18/8/26) as the trailor boat Fish Ful Thinking returned to port, followed a bit later by the FV Jay Elaine and FV Cook Canyon. And heading out to the Hokitika Trench was the FV Jay Penelope.
Sea conditions were nice and calm making for safe crossings.

If you are watching the fishing boats coming in you will see a large number of seabirds following the boats right up to the front of the bar.
Galatea had rather a large number of 'followers' today.
Those watching the boats naturally think that these birds are seagulls, and that is true, some are. However if you looked through binoculars you will see that behind Galatea were Mollymawks, Black Petrels, Shearwaters, and small petrels.
The cropped in image shows the variety. The white circles are Mollymawks, Black - Black Petrels, Green - Prions, and Shearwaters.
So next time you head down to either tiphead bring with you some binoculars. You will be surprised at what you spot.

I headed down the tiphead this morning expecting the bar to be flat due to the strong easterly winds that we were experiencing - however I was wrong. There was rather large sets of big waves rolling in from the Tasman.
I just missed the FV Resolution coming in, but I was there to see the FV Galatea negotiate over the breakers and receive a nice push up the river from a good sized wave. Not long after the FV Cook Canyon hit a wave or two as she headed out. The FV Jay Penelope struck it lucky and cruised over the bar between the wave sets without to much trouble.
