LIGHTHOUSE GLOW
When learning about photography its always important to follow the guidelines, especially when it comes to composition. Once learnt you will then have a good understanding of when to break these “rules” to produce a more compelling image. Although this is a relatively centrally placed subject, for me, it works better landscape orientated than vertically. Yes, I did try both, but this is my preferred image. It seems to me to bring more magisty to the height of the lighthouse. What do you think?

This image is one that I don't like. Sometimes nature gets it right and at other times it becomes too colourful (can't believe I just said that) and this is one of those times. I have pulled back the yellows and reds in this image but they still look too over-processed to me. The earlier shots where the sun wasn't quite so high really sang, sadly not this one!

Who said that your subject needed to be the biggest part of your image? I, for one, don't! Having smaller subjects within the frame of your image can be just as powerful visually than the otherway around. You still need to be mindful of the surroundings or environment in which your subject sits. Here I was lucky with the sky. What do you think?

SCOTT’S CABIN
Remember the old adage, “Don’t leave home without seeing the country”? We are lucky living in New Zealand in that we are surrounded by many, many photogrpahic opportunities and often don’t need to travel far to capture soemthing interesting. This is Scott’s Cabin located on the Port Hills of Christchurch. While it is a good hours drive from home, it was well worth the early start to the day to get this image, don’t you think?

It definitely pays to visit, visit and then revisit the same photographic areas and subjects time and time again. Why? Because everytime you will experience something different. It has been many years since my last photograph of this tree with a clear reflection. Over the last while there has always been just enough of a hint of a wind to cause ripples on the tarn. What do you think?

Winter brings amazing weather patterns and some effects in nature you would otherwise be unlike to see. Hoar frosts are one example, while spin-drift is another. You can even get the occasion whereby the sun is at such an angle that it causes smaller clouds to cast shadows on larger ones, something to really behold at sunset! Come join us on a winter landscape workshop to see what magic can be injected into your imagery.

I don't think Central Otago is usually known for it's waterfalls but if you look hard, there are some beautiful ones hidden away. This is one of my favourites. It can be quite a journey to get too (4WD required) and I've noticed how it changes everytime I visit, not just with the volume of water, but the rocks surrounding it. I haven't been there when the conditions have been right to explain all the damage that is evident with each visit. You wouldn't be able to get there during one of these events!

Hi everyone,

Next year I am looking to hold a landscape photography workshop over on the Chatham Islands, also taking in Pitt Island.

While still undertaking some research and waiting to hear back from sources over there regarding potential fees and dates of availability, I thought I would take time out and ask if any of you were interested in joining me.

Numbers would be limited to only six and I am looking at late November to early December (ten days) in 2027.

If you would like to be added to my list of people to contact once I have further information, please leave the word "Chathams" in the comments below AND then message me with your email address.

Many thanks!

I love views within views (what a cool name for a cafe) and although this isn't one that is particularly startling on this occasion (top image), I love the broken pane and the rusticness of the whole image. With a more dramatic sky, this frame produces a doozy of an image. From a previous visit it looks like the glass has been cleaned up a little. I wonder how many panes will be in place on my next visit into the region?
