I just want to clear the air on this because I’ve been tagged in a few posts and comments around the recent DarkSky International competition discussion, and my winning image has been pulled into some of it.
My image followed the published rules ✅
There seems to be some confusion around the fact that I used two different camera bodies. The rules did not state that the same camera body had to be used. For this type of image, the important requirements were that the components were photographed on the same night, from the same position and at the same focal length. Tracked skies blended with untracked foregrounds were allowed.
For Razorback, I photographed the foreground panorama on my unmodified Canon R5. I then set up and polar-aligned my tracker and photographed the sky panorama on my astro-modified Canon R6 II, from the same location, on the same night, using the same 28mm focal length.
And realistically, why wouldn’t I use the R5 for the foreground?
I could have used the modified R6 II for both, but it simply isn’t the optimal tool for the landscape portion. The R5 gives me a higher-resolution, conventionally filtered file for the foreground, while the modified R6 II is specifically better suited to recording the H-alpha emission in the night sky.
That isn’t bending a rule. It’s using the right tool for each part of the photograph while staying completely within the rules governing how those parts could be captured and combined.
I’m also not going to comment on what other photographers did or didn’t do. It isn’t my competition to run, and it isn’t my place to adjudicate other people’s entries. There are plenty of people already having that discussion.
Not my circus.
But this is my image, my process and my story, so I do think it’s worth correcting the record when my work is being used as an example of something it wasn’t.
Everything in Razorback was photographed by me, from that location, on that night, and within the published rules.
And I’m still very proud of the image and of winning the Nightscapes category.
I'll link an article below as well.
I also added some extra shots from Razorback
