Some images from the fifth and final night (sunset and sunrise) of a recent Fiordland trip with . This remote location is Vancouver Arm at the far end of Te Puaitaha / Breaksea Sound, and fair to say, the conditions were picture perfect. Absolutely love this place!

During 2026 I plan to embark on many new hiking adventures, most of which I’ve been dreaming about for a long time. Some will be small and easy overnighters, many will be challenging multi-day expeditions. Without barely breaking a sweat my initial ‘want to do’ list contains over 50 trips!

I’d originally planned to get started over the Christmas and New Year period, but unfortunately a torn MCL and meniscus in my left knee, obtained in early December, thwarted that plan. The recovery has since been going well … next week I’ll ease back into it with an easy trip, then build from there.

This post contains a random collection of places I’ve had the privilege of spending the night over the last few years (you’ll need to zoom in to find my tent in some of them).

1 – Craigieburn Range
2 - Brewster Glacier
3 – Mt Oakden
4 – Lake Nerine
5 – Mt Titiroa
6 – Waimakariri Falls Hut
7 – Mt Wakefield
8 – Lake Mavis
9 – Upper Adelaide Basin
10 – Sentinel Hill
11 – Mt Owen
12 – Harman Pass
13 – Lake Angelus

Can’t believe this day has finally arrived. After nearly 28-years in a full-time professional career, with my longest ever contiguous break over that time amounting to a few weeks, tomorrow marks the start of a 13-month sabbatical to focus entirely on photography. No more daily commute, no more meetings and Teams calls, and no more +40-hour working week routine. Just the blissful freedom of waking up each day and setting my own agenda. For the last several years I’ve been quietly chipping away at making this dream a reality, and now that day is here. An indescribable feeling!

If you’re interested in knowing a little bit more about my 2026 plans (spoiler alert - a LOT of hiking ... at least when the knee injury I picked up a couple of weeks ago comes right...), and what has led me to this moment, I’ve compiled some thoughts in my ‘2025 in review’ (link in comments).

(It’s been a time for reflection, so in that spirit this post has a few reflection images captured over the years)

A view down the Tasman Valley towards Lake Pukaki from a 1,740m unnamed peak on the southern ramparts of Mt Wakefield, Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. I camped nearby for a couple of nights, making the 30 minute trek here each morning for sunrise - quite the beautiful spot to see in the start of a new day!

(Also, scroll across to see some video footage from the trip.)

Fiordland from the air - always so magical. Looking forward to experiencing this flight again in March, during an 11-day photography tour I’m co-leading with . Just 3 spots remaining I’d you’re interested in joining us (follow the Epic South link in bio) 😊

A nuclear sunset at Milford Sound / Piopiotahi, taken in the middle of this year. Earlier that day we’d driven through a blizzard, we wouldn’t have ever believed the day would end on such an epic note like this!

Can’t wait to back here in a couple of weeks.

Dreaming of getting back to the mountains. My last overnight hike was at the end of 2024, and somehow, nearly 8 months has slipped on by without putting on the tramping boots. Work and life in general has been very busy, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and can’t wait to head into the NZ backcountry once more.

This incredible scene was captured on the last morning of a 4-day trip to Mt Titiroa, in early 2024. Swipe across to see a closer shot of my camp site ⛺️
