Ice our Staffordshire Bull Terrier at our local park. He had gone into the bush. I wanted to capture him emerging from the bush. I managed to capture him positioning camera at the right spot. This pic was taken with my first camera a Canon 1500D and my Canon 70mm to 200mm 2.8F USM lens. I had been doing photography for a few months

For a long time, I saw myself as a landscape photographer. I loved chasing beautiful views, dramatic skies, and quiet moments in nature. But recently, I found myself drawn towards something completely different wildlife photography.

This image was my very first wildlife capture around my own city, Christchurch, taken at Bexley Wetland.

One afternoon, I spotted a couple of kingfishers. I quickly realised that photographing them was going to be a completely different challenge. They were incredibly alert and fast. Every time I got too close or made a little movement, they would fly away before I could even focus properly.

So, instead of chasing them, I decided to change my approach.

I found a quiet place where I could hide and simply wait. I stayed still, kept my distance, and let the birds come to me.

And then? the patience finally paid off.

I managed to capture some beautiful moments of two kingfishers, including this one with its catch.

It wasn?t an easy photograph to get, but that made it even more special to me. It was the moment I realised how much patience, observation, and respect for wildlife can change the way you photograph.

Orokonui Eco Sanctuary

Photo taken during our visit to Orokonui Ecosanctuary back in February. While walking the trail, we spotted a South Island Robin foraging on the forest floor. Fortunately, it didn't fly away and instead stayed close, giving us a wonderful opportunity to observe and photograph it.
The biggest challenge wasn't getting close?it was actually the opposite. The robin kept hopping closer and closer, and I had to keep stepping back just to stay beyond the minimum focusing distance of my lens. It's one of those rare encounters where the subject is more curious about you than you are about it.

Lake Tekapo

I was in Lake Tekapo for two nights with friends and family.
I was really hoping to capture Milkyway for the first time in my life. So went out near the famous church of good shaperd in tekapo to try my luck, unfortunately because of clouds couldn't get good shots. So next night I was not keen as clouds are already covered the milkyway from early evening. So spending time with friends and family indoors. Suddenly at late night around 11:30 one of my friends came to me and said , I think clouds are clearing. So I went out in the open balcony and try some shots, got milkyway shots but then we thaught to go to the famous church and try capturing milkyway. When we went there again didn't get good view, so we went little far from the village lights and spent about 1 hour to get some good shots.

Lake Alexandrina, Mackenzie Country

I grew up in a northern country with snowy winters, so given the opportunity of the Matariki long weekend and amazing weather down in the Mackenzie Country, my friend and I set off on a journey to re-experience the proper winter (sorry, Christchurch, it's nothing personal!).

We drove away from the crowds in Tekapo down to Lake Alexandrina's campground. The lake presented us with true serenity and purity of winter. The bright sun was playfully reflecting off the icy snow and calm waters of the lake, which were disturbed by the only residents of the campground - ducks.

The shot's exact composition was a quick flight of pure luck, but I really wanted to capture the peaceful beauty of winter. My editing was more intentional, leaning into the nostalgia I have for my childhood spent playing in the snow.

Photography reminds me that every change in nature has two sides.

After a week of relentless rain, influenced by El Ni?o, many people complain about the gloomy weather, disrupted plans, or even the risk of flooding. But while we see inconvenience, another world quietly comes to life.

The tiny organisms hidden beneath our feet?mosses, fungi, lichens, and countless small forms of life?thrive because of this rain. What feels like a miserable week to us may be a season of abundance for them. Their happiness depends on the very weather we often wish would disappear.

This is one of the reasons I photograph nature. It reminds me that the world is far bigger than our own perspective. Every storm that ruins someone?s day may also be giving another living thing exactly what it needs to survive. Sometimes, what we complain about is the reason something else can truly live.
