Day 7 :

Today’s species is the Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), one of the most beloved mammals in the Netherlands.

Small, shy, and mostly active after dark, hedgehogs play an important role in our ecosystems by keeping insect populations in balance. Despite their spiky appearance, they are gentle creatures and sadly becoming less common due to habitat loss and traffic.

Day 6:
Today’s species is the Fallow Deer (Dama dama), known for its elegant posture and distinctive palmate antlers.

Graceful and alert, fallow deer are a familiar sight in Dutch forests and parklands. Their varied coat patterns and social behaviour make them fascinating to observe, especially in the quieter moments when they move calmly through their habitat.

Day 5 ✨
Today’s species is the Red Deer (Cervus elaphus), the largest land mammal in the Netherlands.

This impressive stag, crowned with powerful antlers, embodies the wild heart of our forests and heathlands. Often most active at dawn and dusk, red deer are a symbol of strength, hierarchy, and the delicate balance of nature. Moments like this, calm, alert, and untamed , show why patience is essential in wildlife photography.

Today’s highlight is the Stork (Ciconia ciconia), one of the most iconic birds of the Netherlands.

A symbol of wetlands, open landscapes, and conservation success, the stork’s return to the Dutch skies is a story of resilience. With its impressive wingspan and unmistakable silhouette, seeing and photographing this species is always a powerful reminder of how protected habitats can help wildlife thrive.

Day 3 :
Meet the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco), a true guardian of the night forests of the Netherlands.

Mostly heard before it is seen, the tawny owl’s haunting call echoes through woodlands after sunset. Capturing this elusive nocturnal hunter marks another special milestone in the challenge to photograph every animal listed in the books of Dutch wildlife.

Silent flight, piercing eyes, and perfect camouflage, a reminder that much of nature’s magic happens after dark.

The journey continues, day by day, species by species.
