Ben Mathot is Ayreon's trusted violinist — since 01011001 in 2008 his name has appeared on every single album. Arjen Lucassen once simply called him "our trusted virtuoso" and that really says it all. In the studio world Ben is a highly sought-after session musician whose playing you'll find on records by Epica, ReVamp, Xandria, Stream of Passion and many more. He works closely with both Arjen and Joost van den Broek — two of the most prolific names in the Dutch prog scene.

But live is a different story. Because on the stage of 013 Tilburg, Ben is not just a musician in the background. He is the bridge between the heavy guitar wall and the singers up front. The violin that suddenly makes a heavy riff feel fragile. The detail you don't notice until it's gone — and then you miss it immediately.

Three people in the Ensemble. Each indispensable in their own way. Ben Mathot is the soul of it.

Ayreonaut Jeroen Goossens: the man with the most instruments

You hear him before you see him.

Jeroen Goossens () has appeared on every single Ayreon album since 2004 and in all live shows — without exception.

Jeroen started playing the recorder at age ten and never stopped. His woodwind collection is nothing short of extraordinary: flute, piccolo, alto flute, bass flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, panpipes, traverso — and he even builds some of his own instruments. Beyond Ayreon he has played with Flairck, Pater Moeskroen, Epica, Xandria and The Gentle Storm. The man is everywhere.

And then there's the didgeridoo.

During Loser, it happens. The first notes of the didge ring out — and the room explodes. Every. Single. Time. Possibly the most unexpected instrument on a prog metal stage, but in the Ayreon universe it feels completely natural. That deep, resonant hum that moves right through your chest.

What the audience doesn't see: Loser is probably the hardest song of the entire evening for Jeroen. The rapid switches between instruments — from flute to didge to something else and back again — demand a level of concentration and agility that's almost invisible from the outside. While the crowd is going wild, Jeroen is already three instruments ahead.

Quietly off to the side. Completely indispensable at the centre of everything.

There's always a little bit of waiting until the end of the show. But then there he is — multiple times. .

And that's exactly as it should be, because Robert and Arjen Lucassen go back further than Ayreon itself. In the early nineties, Arjen saw him perform with Bodine and was immediately impressed — describing him as someone with the charisma and power of David Coverdale and Robert Plant. They started writing songs together, found a natural flow and had a wealth of ideas. That project, Plan Nine, sat in a drawer for years — until they recently brought those long-lost songs back to life on the album The Long-Lost Songs. Robert said it himself: "Inspiring each other and enjoying the process again has meant a lot."

But before all of that, Robert already appeared on the very first Ayreon album. And since then he's never really been away. In the studio, on stage — Robert Soeterboek and Arjen Lucassen belong together the way a good riff belongs with a solo.

At 013 Tilburg he was there again. Waiting in the wings, appearing at exactly the right moments. And every time that voice filled the room, you remembered exactly why Arjen has kept him close for over thirty years.

There are artists you follow. And then there are artists where every show you think: he's gotten even better.

Jermain van der Bogt, better known as Wudstik/ , is one of those for me.

Jermain is vocalist of Dilemma and of the beautiful project For All We Know by Within Temptation guitarist Ruud Jolie. But his world is much broader than that. From collaborations with Probz, Ali B, Diggy Dex, Hef and Jiggy Djé to his own Dutch-language work — the latter so beautiful it stops you in your tracks sometimes. And when he steps up for a Dream Theater tribute and effortlessly nails those long, high notes? You just stand there watching in disbelief.

That's what makes Jermain unique: he slips from one genre to the next without breaking a sweat, and in every genre he sounds like he belongs there. Because he does.

At 013 Tilburg he stood on the Ayreon stage. And there too he showed exactly what he's capable of. No hesitation, no gaps — just an artist who keeps moving forward every single time.

grew up in Botkyrka, just outside Stockholm. At twelve, his mother took him to see The Phantom of the Opera in Stockholm — and that moment changed everything. What followed was a career that took him via Seventh Wonder to the frontman position of Kamelot, one of the biggest names in symphonic metal. Arjen Lucassen once described him as "one of the best singers in the world right now" — and when someone says that, you simply ask them for Ayreon.

Oh, and in between all of that he worked twenty years as a full-time firefighter. Just for something to do.

On the Ayreon stage at 013 Tilburg Tommy showed exactly why Arjen has called him back more than once. That voice — warm, theatrical, full of emotion and control — fits the Ayreon universe like a glove. No antics, no stage madness. Just a singer who knows exactly what he's doing and takes the audience with him in every single word.

From Melbourne, Australia — straight into the heart of 013 Tilburg.

Michael Mills, better known as Mike Mills () , is the man behind Australian prog band Toehider. Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer — and then that voice. Four octaves of range, from deep and gritty to screaming highs, from clean to grunt, and everything in between. Arjen Lucassen once called him "one of my heroes." That says it all.

Mike has appeared on multiple Ayreon productions and every time he delivers. But live he's a whole other story. Because Mike Mills isn't just a singer — he's an event in himself. The moment that happy face bounces onto the stage, the crowd goes wild. No warm-up needed, no easing in — just instant full-throttle energy from the very first second. Today, Ayreon — 30th Anniversary: An Amazing Flight Through Time is released via Music Theories Recordings.

For five days, 013 Tilburg was the epicentre of the international prog scene. Three shows, a dress rehearsal, and two special Pathé evenings where Joost and Arjen were personally present for a quiz ahead of a screening of the previous Ayreon release. The city embraced it fully — Ayreon beer on tap in the pubs, special burgers on the menu. Tilburg lived it.

As their house photographer I was, again, fully part of it — from the first rehearsal to the final note of the fifth show and the stress release afterwards celebrated with champagne.

Over the past few weeks I've highlighted a number of the artists. Not everyone has had their moment yet — that's still coming. But today the work itself takes centre stage. Arjen Lucassen's, the artists', the entire crew's.

You don't get to be part of something like this every day.

There are guests at Ayreon, and then there's Damian Wilson / .

The Englishman has been part of the Ayreon universe since 1998 — from the very first moment he worked with Arjen on Into the Electric Castle. And he never really left. Six Ayreon productions, multiple Star One albums, and Arjen once said it himself: "Damian has become a part of Ayreon." That says it all.

Outside of Ayreon, Damian has built an impressive CV. Threshold, Arena, Rick Wakeman's English Rock Ensemble, Headspace — over seventy album releases carry his name. And as if that wasn't enough: he spent two years playing Jean Valjean in the West End tour of Les Misérables. The man can truly do it all.
His voice is warm, powerful and full of feeling — and Arjen knows better than anyone how to bring out the best in it. At 013 Tilburg, Damian was simply there again. Like always. Like it should be.

And from the female Ayreonauts we move to the male ones, starting with newcomer .

New to Ayreon — but this is far from an unknown name in the rock world. Croatian vocalist Dino Jelusick has built an impressive CV. From his own band Jelusick and the album Apocalyptical Ecstasy that stormed Spotify, to collaborations with Animal Drive, Dirty Shirley, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and jam sessions with the likes of Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess and Jeff Scott Soto. And if that wasn't enough: he currently stands alongside David Coverdale on stage as vocalist of Whitesnake. The man never stands still.

And then suddenly he's standing in 013 Tilburg, right in the middle of the Ayreon universe — a world of layered music, epic storylines and a stage full of absolute world-class singers and musicians. New to this company, but you'd never know it. He owns that stage like he's always belonged there. That voice — raw, powerful, full of character — stays with you. And Arjen Lucassen doesn't ask just anyone. When Dino stands on that stage, there's a reason.

is one of the most versatile artists the Dutch music scene has ever produced. She started with The Gathering — who doesn't know "Strange Machines"!? — and grew into one of the most distinctive voices in (progressive) rock. But standing still was never on the agenda. Over the years she's appeared in collaborations with Arjen Lucassen, Devin Townsend, Anathema's Danny Cavanagh and VUUR, just to name a few. Solo, in bands, as a guest — Anneke moves effortlessly through genres and projects as if boundaries simply don't exist.

And now, thirty years after the legendary album Mandylion, she's taking the original lineup of The Gathering around the world to honour that album the way it deserves. That alone says everything about her place in the music world.

At 013 Tilburg she was back on the Ayreon stage. Because Arjen knows exactly who he needs — and Anneke is always part of that.
