Troy is a city located in southeastern Alabama and serves as the county seat of Pike County. It is situated approximately fifty miles southeast of the state capital of Montgomery along U.S. Route 231. The area was originally settled in the early 1830s on land that was once Muskogee Creek territory and was initially known by names including Deer Stand Hill, Zebulon, and Centreville before being formally named Troy in 1838. It was officially incorporated on February 4, 1843.

The city is primarily known as the home of Troy University, a major public institution founded in 1887 that significantly influences the local economy, culture, and demographics. The university features the International Arts Center and the Janice Hawkins Cultural Arts Park on its campus.
