In June 2013, Kedarnath was transformed within minutes.

Days of extreme rainfall had swollen rivers across Uttarakhand. Then water, mud, rocks and debris surged down through the valley, turning the Mandakini into a violent torrent.

Buildings, roads and bridges were torn apart. Entire settlements downstream were devastated. Thousands of people across the region were killed or reported missing.

When the floodwaters receded, the landscape around Kedarnath looked almost unrecognizable.

But one image became impossible to ignore: the Kedarnath Temple still standing amid a vast field of destruction.

A disaster remembered not only for its scale — but for the evidence it left behind.

The Johnstown Flood took everything from 16-year-old Victor Heiser. He survived, but both of his parents were lost.

They told him some of the children might have to be left behind.

John Stark refused.

In March 1847, during the desperate rescue of Donner Party survivors trapped in the Sierra Nevada, Stark and two other rescuers encountered 11 people — including nine children.

The group was exhausted, starving, and struggling through deep snow. The rescuers could not easily move everyone at once.

But Stark would not abandon the children.

He pushed forward in relays, carrying the weakest children through the snow and returning for others.

All nine children survived.

In a disaster remembered for death, starvation, and impossible choices, John Stark became remembered for making one choice very clear:

No child would be left behind.

On 9/11, when Lower Manhattan was overwhelmed and normal escape routes became impossible, thousands of people moved toward the waterfront.

Then something extraordinary happened.

Ferries, tugboats, sightseeing vessels, private boats, and Coast Guard crews began carrying people away from Manhattan. There was no single fleet prepared for this moment — the response grew rapidly across New York Harbor as mariners answered the emergency.

Estimates vary, but roughly 300,000 to 500,000 people were evacuated by water in the hours after the attacks.

It became one of the largest emergency maritime evacuations in modern history.
No rehearsed script. No dramatic movie rescue.
Just boats arriving, loading strangers, and returning for more.

That’s the number most often connected to Welles Crowther — the 24-year-old who became known after 9/11 as the Man in the Red Bandana.

But the number came from survivors who lived to tell the story and later connected the unidentified man who helped them to Welles.

For months, they didn’t even know his name.

They remembered the red bandana.
And that leaves one question history may never be able to answer:

How many people did he help who never knew who had helped them?

Police had a suspect. The clues looked disturbing. But they could never prove he was Zodiac.

Arthur Leigh Allen became one of the most heavily investigated suspects in the Zodiac case. Investigators searched his property and examined details that seemed suspicious.

But the case never crossed the line from suspicion to proof.

Handwriting examinations did not establish him as Zodiac. Fingerprint evidence did not definitively connect him to the crimes. No conclusive evidence ever proved he was the killer.

Allen died in 1992 without ever being charged as the Zodiac Killer.

So if Arthur Leigh Allen wasn’t Zodiac…

A killer sent this coded message in 1969.

For more than 50 years, the 340-character cipher known as Z340 resisted amateur sleuths, professional cryptographers, and investigators.

Then, in 2020, it was finally cracked.

But the answer everyone wanted wasn’t inside.
The message revealed more of the Zodiac Killer’s words — but not his identity.
They cracked the code.

They still couldn’t crack the man.

After the attacks, the killer did something even stranger.

He began writing directly to newspapers.

In July 1969, letters arrived at the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner, and Vallejo Times-Herald. The writer claimed responsibility for earlier attacks, included details about the crimes, and demanded that the newspapers publish what he had sent.

But the letters contained something else.

A cipher.

Hundreds of strange symbols arranged into a coded message.

Days later, another letter arrived. This time, the writer introduced himself with the name that would become infamous:

“the Zodiac.”

The murders terrified Northern California.

But the letters turned the case into something even more disturbing — a killer communicating directly with the public while investigators tried to understand what he was saying.

And some of his coded messages would remain unsolved for decades.

They put fake heads in their beds… and by morning, three Alcatraz prisoners were gone.

On June 11, 1962, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin escaped their cells through openings behind the walls, climbed into a utility corridor, and made their way off the island using a homemade raft built from raincoats.

The dummy heads fooled guards long enough to buy them time.

What happened next is still debated.

No confirmed bodies were ever recovered, and the FBI eventually closed its investigation after concluding the men most likely drowned — but their fate has never been proven beyond doubt.

That unanswered question is why the 1962 Alcatraz escape still fascinates people today.
