The past preserves itself in bronze
The present preserves in pixels
On Wenzhou Road, Shanghai, a young woman pauses to capture a selfie, seemingly unaware —or perhaps perfectly aware—of the unusual company she has chosen.
Behind her, weathered sculptural figures stand frozen in another moment, holding a cluster of balloons. In front, the young woman turns the camera towards herself, creating a fascinating encounter between the permanence of sculpture and the immediacy of the smartphone.
The photograph becomes a commentary on how we record our lives where the past and present meet within the same frame.

A shared climb
High above the city of Xining, in China's Qinghai Province, a couple slowly ascends the steep flight of steps leading towards an impressive tensile-roofed pavilion at Kushuigou Park.
The architectural form rises dramatically against the open sky, its graceful curves contrasting with the geometric rhythm of the stone staircase below, where the structure commands attention through its scale and design, it is the two solitary figures that give the scene its human dimension.

Echoes of remembrance
The quiet truth of that reflection is echoed in this faded floral tribute left upon a grave at the cemetery in Gorakana, Panadura, Sri Lanka.
Once vibrant with colour and fragrance, these flowers were carefully arranged as symbols of love, remembrance, and farewell though time, has gently reclaimed them. Their petals have withered, their leaves have dried, and the bouquet has slowly returned to the earth from which it came.
Across many cultures, flowers accompany life's most significant moments—from celebration to mourning. Yet perhaps nowhere is their symbolism more profound than in their inevitable decay. Their beauty is fleeting, reminding us that all living things are subject to change.
In Buddhist thought, this is the essence of Anicca—the universal truth that nothing remains unchanged.

Motherhood beyond words
On the outskirts of Chiang Mai, a young mother of the Karen ethnic community cradles her sleeping child in a traditional cloth carrier slung securely across her shoulder.
The Karen people—also known as the Kayin or Kariang—are an indigenous ethnic group whose communities extend across Myanmar and Northern Thailand. Renowned for their rich cultural traditions, distinctive woven garments, handcrafted jewelry, and enduring sense of community, many Karen families continue to preserve customs that have been passed down through generations.
Here, the mother's large ear ornament and traditional attire reflect that cultural identity, while the improvised cloth sling speaks of a practical tradition shared by many indigenous communities. More than simply carrying a child, it keeps the infant close to the reassuring rhythm of a mother's heartbeat where motherhood is expressed through the same gentle gestures—a protective embrace, a watchful gaze, and the quiet promise of safety.

Through the Mughal arch
The last rays of the evening sun spill across the richly ornamented walls of Agra Fort, momentarily illuminating a woman as she steps through one of its imposing arched entrances.
Draped in a traditional sari and a vibrant shawl, she pauses within a naturally formed patch of golden light, framed by the intricate floral carvings and elegant Mughal architecture that have endured for centuries. Built primarily during the reign of Emperor Akbar in the 16th century and later enhanced by his successors, Agra Fort remains one of India's finest examples of imperial architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 27°10'42.6"N 78°01'24.1"E

Palms against the setting sun
As evening descends over Galle Face Green, the sun slips behind a line of palm trees bordering the skyline of Port City Colombo. Viewed from the shoreline, the scene unfolds in layers—the gentle swells of the Indian Ocean in the foreground, the silhouettes of swaying palms standing like silent sentinels, and the glowing disc of the setting sun disappearing beyond the western horizon.
Almost every evening, thousands gather along Galle Face Green to witness this familiar spectacle. Families, couples, joggers, street vendors, and photographers share the promenade, drawn not only by the cool sea breeze but also by one of Colombo's most cherished daily rituals.

Where fishermen and Egrets meet
Late in the morning along the shores of Negombo, fishing boats return beneath a magnificent tropical sky as the day's catch is brought ashore.
Sardines (Salaya), sprats (Halmassa), and other small coastal varieties, gathered off the nets are collected into baskets and carried back into the shallows for a final rinse before being taken to market. Amidst the activity, a flock of Little Egrets (Egretta garzetta) waits patiently at the water's edge, ever watchful for fish that may escape the fishermen's hands.
The scene is a familiar one on Sri Lanka's western coast—a harmonious meeting of labour and nature, where the rhythms of traditional fishing are observed not only by people, but also by the birds that have learned to share in the sea's bounty.

As the clock on the wall keeps its own time, for a labourer at a pocket-sized boarding room in Pettah, the day begins long before the city reaches full stride and prepares for another shift, accompanied by little more than a weathered fan, a few basic comforts, and the promise of another hot and humid day ahead. For many who come to Colombo's commercial district seeking work, these cramped lodgings are part of the unseen infrastructure of the city—temporary homes occupied between long hours of physical labour and modest wages.

Under a restless sky
Near the Pitipana Bridge, a multi-day fishing vessel lies in semi-silhouette against a dramatic morning sky after returning from the deep waters of the Indian Ocean. These larger vessels often remain at sea for several days at a time, preserving their catch in layers of ice before returning to the busy fish markets along the lagoon. Anchored in the early hours beside Negombo Lagoon, the boat bears the quiet evidence of labour, endurance, and livelihood tied closely to Sri Lanka’s coastal fishing communities.
The darkened outline of the vessel against the textured sky lends the scene a rugged and timeless quality; reflecting the uncertainty of the sea and the resilience of those who depend upon it.
