At Spartan Photography Kenya, we believe football is not only about what happens on the pitch — it is also about the people who show up for it. We teamed up with Faith Moraa, who brought together a vibrant group of fan models and women football enthusiasts, each proudly wearing different Kenyan club jerseys.
At Dandora Stadium, we wanted to capture something simple but powerful: the pride of wearing your club colours and being part of a football culture that is growing right here at home.

Every ticket bought, every jersey worn and every voice from the stands helps give our clubs the support they need to grow, gives players a reason to keep pushing and gives young footballers something to dream about.

We have been organising this shoot with Faith Moraa at Dandora Stadium for the longest time and it finally came
Faith is the founder of Dada Sports Africa and one of those local journalists who keeps showing up for football, especially women’s and girls’ football. While many people only notice the game when there is a big tournament or a famous player, Faith has been there telling the smaller stories — the girls playing on local pitches, the teams fighting for space, and the people working behind the scenes to keep the game alive.

So when we had the opportunity to photograph her at Dandora Stadium, we wanted to do something simple.

Faith put on the 3K FC jersey from Embu....

For a moment, it felt like she wasn't just wearing a football jersey. She was stepping into the story she has spent years documenting.

Dandora Stadium has its own stories. You see young players running around with dreams bigger than the pitch they are playing on. You see coaches shouting from the sidelines, teammates encouraging each other, and families hoping that one day their child will get that opportunity.

And somewhere in all those stories are people like Faith — people who pick up a camera, ask questions, write the story and make sure these players are seen.
Because sometimes the people telling the story also deserve to become part of the story.

I wasn’t even planning to tell this story 😂 but now that John Kariuki has asked why we wrapped the fish, sasa the truth must come out.

During the NET INCOME shoot, Shawn, one of our team members at Spartan Photography Kenya, heard that we were shooting with real fish. Before we even set up the camera, this guy asked me, “Deno, hizo fish tukishoot tuziwrap nitachukua after shoot.” 😂😂

I swear, that was his biggest concern. Not the concept. Not the lighting. Not the camera. THE FISH. 😭😭😂 Shawn had already seen his supper before we had even taken the first shot.

So John, that's why tuliziwrap. 😂 We were not taking chances. Once Shawn says “nitachukua,” you better believe that fish is already under new management. 🐟😂

This is what happens when you work with a team that is creative, passionate… and one member who apparently takes NET INCOME very literally. 😂😂

For NET INCOME, we asked a simple question: what if income wasn’t something sitting in a bank account, but something you had to catch? We turned a fishing net into a visual metaphor for livelihood, survival and the everyday needs that depend on it.
Every fish represents more than its market value—it can mean food on the table, school fees, rent, transport, or simply making it through another day.
Instead of simply documenting a fisherwoman at work, we created an image that makes an ordinary livelihood speak about something much bigger: the economy of survival.
This is what happens when photography moves beyond documentation and becomes visual storytelling—when an idea becomes an image people stop to look at, think about and remember.

FISH NI KIOO

In Sheng, kioo can mean KSh 100. But kioo is also a mirror. And that is where this image begins. Fish ni Kioo is a simple phrase with a much bigger story behind it. In an economy where KSh 100 can determine whether someone gets a meal, pays for transport, buys something for their child, or simply makes it through another day, the value of a fish goes far beyond what we see on the market stall. For the woman holding it, that fish is not just a fish. It can be income, food, school fees, rent, opportunity, survival and hope. The mirror asks her to look at herself, but it also asks us to look at the economy around her. What do we see when we look at a fish? A commodity? A meal? KSh 100? Or someone's livelihood?

This is the thinking behind NET INCOME, a conceptual photography project exploring the invisible stories behind income, work and survival. We wanted to look beyond the obvious meaning of a fishing net and ask what really comes out of it. Because sometimes the net catches fish, but what it really carries home is a child's school fees, a family's dinner, tomorrow's transport, or another chance to survive. Fish ni Kioo therefore becomes a reflection of our economy and the everyday Kenyan reality where small amounts of money can carry enormous weight.

At Spartan Photography Kenya, we believe photography should do more than make something look beautiful. It should make people stop, think, feel and act. A powerful image can communicate what pages of reports struggle to explain. For businesses, creative visual storytelling can turn an ordinary product, service or campaign into something people remember—and ultimately help increase visibility, engagement and sales. For NGOs, foundations and social-impact organisations, the right visual story can transform statistics into human experiences, helping potential donors and partners understand not only what you do, but why it matters.
