MORE TIPS ⬇️

DAY 2 solo hiking the Tour du Vallaisonnay in Vanoise National Park, France, and today I learned that a 6 km hiking day can still humble you.

I’m hiking this 5-day self-guided hut-to-hut trek through the French Alps with , and today took me from Refuge d’Entre le Lac to Refuge de Plaisance.

Refuge d’Entre le Lac → Refuge de Plaisance
6 km | ~3 hours

The hardest part for me came almost immediately: the ascent behind Refuge d’Entre le Lac.

I hadn’t slept much the night before. Shared mountain refuge dorms mean snorers, people getting up and sometimes just a noisy night. I also didn’t eat enough that morning.

Combine that with an ascent first thing and my body was basically asking, “Ma’am, what exactly are we doing here?”

DAY 2 LESSON: Eat breakfast. Even when you don’t feel particularly hungry. And if you’re a light sleeper, EARPLUGS belong on your hut-to-hut hiking packing list.

Eventually I made my way to Refuge de Plaisance, where one of the highlights was something very simple: a modern hot shower.

Plaisance shower tip: Take your clothes off and get completely ready BEFORE putting your coin in. Then insert the coin and press the green button. Don’t waste precious hot-water time trying to undress after you’ve started it.

If you’re a solo female traveler or newer to hut-to-hut hiking, this is why I’m sharing the little details along with the pretty mountain views. The kilometers only tell you part of the story. Sleep, food, elevation, weather and how you’re feeling that day all affect your hike.

Tomorrow: Refuge de la Glière.

DAY 1 INFO⬇️

If you’re a solo female hiker or solo female traveler looking for a self-guided hut-to-hut hike in the French Alps, here’s what Day 1 actually looks like.

I was hosted by for this 5-day self-guided trek through Vanoise National Park.

Refuge de Rosuel → Refuge d’Entre le Lac
8.6 km | +730 m | ~3h40
1,547 m → 2,145 m

I took the free shuttle from Nancroix to Refuge de Rosuel to start the trail.

From Rosuel, you gradually climb up and out of the valley, with some STEEP sections along the way. The trail eventually takes you past waterfalls and Lac de la Plagne before reaching Refuge d’Entre le Lac.

A few practical things to know:

Don’t underestimate 8.6 km in the Alps. The elevation gain, terrain and weight of your backpack make a difference.

Hiking shoes and poles stay near the refuge entrance and you change into hut shoes.

Backpacks stay outside the dormitory as part of the refuge’s bed-bug prevention protocol. Keep your toiletries, sleep clothes and evening essentials somewhere easy to grab.

When I stayed, a hot shower was €3 for 3 minutes.

Dinner is communal at 7 p.m., which is also a great opportunity to meet other hikers. I met people hiking the GR5 and other routes through Vanoise.

This is a family friendly hike, I saw whole families out on the trails and it’s also solo female hiker friendly.

And keep your eyes open for wildlife, bring the binoculars! I spotted ibex and eagles on Day 1.

Bring Euro to pay for things at the Hut. Many Rifugios work off solar power and gadgets don’t work sometimes! Although there are places to plug your electronics in.

Tomorrow: Refuge de Plaisance.

Probably one of the best hut to hut I’ve done in awhile.

I just spent 4 nights/5 days hiking the Tour de Vallaisonay in France’s Haute Savoie and I have so much to share. I had zero service the entire time so I’ll be pushing out quite a few bits on this in the coming days..

This self guided hut to hut was through Bookatrekking.com and I can’t wait to show you how YOU can do it!

Here’s a sneak peak of a very beautiful guy I met on the trail…

The 2026 Brussels Flower Carpet: through my lens.

Do you have the Brussels Flower Carpet on your bucketlist?

The next one is in 2028, so you have some time to make plans but it was absolutely a stunning sight to see.

The time and love put into this by volunteers is simply astounding!
