Winter is slowly returning and it’s honestly super exciting. I used to hate winter with a passion. Growing up it meant horrible driving, trying to stay warm while working, a long list of inconvenient things. Now I’ve grown so fond of it. It brings a magical feeling to all my trips. I usually make the most of it and get my snow tires on to go deep into more unique terrain, and this was one of those moments. Complete winter wonderland :)

What’s a place I should hit up this winter for a total winter escape?

My date was actually my mom.

We visited the Duomo in Milan on a mother-son trip to Italy a few years back. Such a cool place to experience together!

Cloud inversions were a regular part of my first trip to the Dolomites.

Cold air can collect in mountain valleys overnight, forming fog when there’s enough moisture. From above, the peaks stay in view while the lower ground disappears beneath the clouds.

I visited at the beginning of fall, with the leaves changing. Five days on a road trip, and this was one of the views I brought home.

In Istanbul, crossing continents can be a ferry ride.

The Bosphorus separates the city’s European and Asian sides. Ferries pass the waterfront as domes and minarets fill the skyline. From above, the evening light spreads across the water.

The photographer pauses at the waterfront. The ferry behind him keeps going.

My first tiger in the wild appeared on my birthday. She walked through the dry grass in India, looking straight ahead, with no idea what day it was for me.

I filmed the rest of these moments thousands of miles apart: a capuchin eating in Brazil, an owl almost lost in Panama’s moss, a howler with her baby, a bird holding still in the rain, and llamas crossing Ecuador’s open ground. Each was in the middle of its own day.

She kept walking. I got a birthday story I’ll be telling for a long time.
