Squacco heron is a small stout heron; favors freshwater marshes, lakes, and ponds with reeds and other surrounding vegetation. Tends to hunt rather sluggishly, hunched quietly at the edge of the water. At rest, appears buffy brown overall, but in flight transforms to mostly white when white wings and tail are revealed...
La sgarza ciuffetto è un airone piccolo e robusto; predilige paludi d'acqua dolce, laghi e stagni con canneti e altra vegetazione circostante. Tende a cacciare piuttosto lentamente, rannicchiato e silenzioso sul bordo dell'acqua. A riposo, appare di un colore bruno-fulvo uniforme, ma in volo si trasforma in un piumaggio prevalentemente bianco, con ali e coda bianche che si rivelano.
