The loggia at Balbianello sits where the promontory narrows almost to nothing — water on both sides, Bellagio hazy across the basin, that one arched walkway framing everything past it. By mid-afternoon the light comes in low and warm off the lake. That’s the window we’d built the whole shoot around.

Elisabeth and Ellis took it slowly. No rushing between the loggia and the plane tree clipped into its low parasol of leaves, no hunting for a backdrop — just the two of them moving through a place that does most of the work on its own, if you know when to be standing in it.

That’s the part couples don’t always see coming. At Balbianello the difference between a good frame and a great one is usually just timing: which terrace at which hour, and being there before the afternoon boats start rounding the point.

Most couples arrive at Villa del Balbianello, Villa Melzi, or Villa Cipressi and only then discover they need a photo permit just to shoot inside.

It’s not a detail — it’s the difference between a session that works and one that doesn’t.

Each villa has its own rules. Its own ticket system. Its own limits on when, where, and how you can photograph. Plan around them and you get the gardens to yourselves. Ignore them and you’re negotiating with security while the light moves on.

The best version of Lake Como isn’t the one you stumble into. It’s the one with exclusive villa access — no crowds, no time pressure, no compromises.

That’s what these images are.

The loggia at Villa del Balbianello does most of the work. Three ivy-wrapped arches, the compass rose underfoot, the lake stretched wide between the columns — and somewhere in the middle of it all, Joseph dropped to one knee.
Sarah looked down, then up, then everywhere at once.
They had the villa to themselves that afternoon. Private use. No other visitors arriving by ferry, no one waiting at the edge of the frame. Just the wooden boat that had carried them across the water, the colonnade that has watched a hundred years of quieter moments, and the slow afternoon light the lake reserves for couples who plan it carefully.
A proposal here is not something you improvise. The boat matters. The hour matters. The villa has to say yes. Joseph thought about all of it long before he asked the question that mattered.
Congratulations, you two.

Three villas. One lake.

Villa del Balbianello from the water — the cypress terrace, the promontory dropping straight into the lake on both sides. Villa Melzi’s gardens in the quiet before the day starts, wisteria overhead, no one else around. Villa Monastero arriving by boat, the facade rising from the shoreline as you pull in.

Lake Como doesn’t reward the unprepared. The permits, the boats, the drone authorizations, the timing — each venue has its own logic. Get it right and the place does something extraordinary in front of the camera.

Proposals, elopements, weddings. This is what it looks like when all of it comes together.

The mosaic floor of Villa Monastero's loggia has been there for over a century.
Melissa didn't notice it.
She was too busy saying yes.
Three frames. One afternoon. The moment on the portico where the columns frame the lake just so — then the arched gallery, the mountains behind them going quiet — then the boat pulling away from Varenna as the light dropped into gold.
This is what a Lake Como proposal looks like when nothing is left to chance.
Melissa and Michael — thank you for being so completely in your own world that I was just a fly on the wall. 🤍

A Lake Como proposal at Villa del Balbianello, at the hour when the lake turns silver and the mountains go gold on one side and shadow on the other.
Cole had chosen the loggia — the famous one, with vines climbing the granite columns and the compass rose set into the floor. Nord-Ovest, the inscription reads, pointing toward the lake. He knelt on it. Angela barely let him finish.
We moved to the boat afterward. From the water the villa rearranges itself: the Holm Oak rounds over the terrace like a green dome, the balustrade catches the last light, statues hold their pose above the lake. The wake cut a quiet line back toward Tremezzo.
There's no improvising a proposal here. The villa is booked months in advance, the boat is positioned with the loggia framed exactly right, the drone authorization cleared weeks before, sunset timed almost to the minute. Lake Como is generous with the couples who plan for it.
Angela & Cole — thank you for trusting me with this.

That laugh. The one that comes after — unrehearsed, unguarded, already belonging to a different life than the one she woke up with that morning.
Villa del Balbianello has a quality few places on earth share: it holds emotion the way old stone holds warmth. By the time couples reach its terraces, something in the air seems to lower every guard.
This frame is a Lake Como proposal in its purest form — not the ring, not the view, but the ten seconds after, when she forgets there’s a camera anywhere nearby.
Planning a proposal on Lake Como? The light, the architecture, the silence between the cypresses — it does most of the work. Having someone who knows exactly where to stand, and when to disappear, does the rest.

He planned everything. The boat, the timing, the ring.
The only thing he couldn’t plan was the way Lily looked at him when she turned around.
A surprise proposal on Lake Como — crossing the water toward Villa del Balbianello, just the two of them and the mountains.
This is what I get to witness. 🛥️💍
These moments happen fast. Knowing exactly where the light falls, which angle the boat approaches from, where to stand before she turns — that only comes from knowing this lake.

The wisteria was still blooming when Efren asked.
Samantha said yes on the bow of a wooden taxi boat, Villa del Balbianello rising behind them — and the whole lake held its breath.
A moment like this doesn’t happen by accident. It takes the right spot on the water — close enough to feel the villa, far enough to see it whole. The right boat, timed to pass at exactly the right angle. And a photographer who already knows where the light will fall before you even arrive.
Lake Como rewards those who plan it well. And forgives nothing when they don’t.
