Thinking of the first time I took Nicolas & Adrien to Arles. I was a Photo Folio Winner and exhibited at Les Rencontres d’Arles 2007 in l’ Atelier de La Chaudronnerie. They loved the spirit of the anciens ateliers SNCF. They saw the image of themselves huge. I think they then understood they were in the laboratory of my image-making which was vaster than our universe.

Just arrived in Esparon in the South of France, gleefully caught by the dramatic summer rain pouring over Esparon in the Cévennes—my childhood summer home and creative haven for the past sixty years.

My father bought this rustic house in 1966, in an abandoned hamlet after WWII—an eagle’s nest perched between mountains and vast skies. It has witnessed four generations of our family and has gradually become one of the living landscapes of my work. In my Nicolas & Adrien work, begun in 2005 and still continuing today, Esparon has been present every summer for 21 years.

It inspired my short film Summertime à Esparon (2023), where I weave together my grandfather’s and father’s family archives with my own photographs and films, creating a dialogue around youthful states of being across four generations of image-making.
