Gaurav Ramnarayanan is a Wildlife Photographer, Wildlife Expedition Guide and COO of Safari Crafters, a Travel and Photography company based in India.

At a tender age of just 3 years, Gaurav Ramnarayanan wielded a camera gifted by his father. As a child, he spent many of his weekends in a house their family-owned nearby one of the Tiger reserves in South India. Growing up in the lap of nature and being exposed to photography so early in his life, Gaurav’s keen interest in the natural world grew leaps and bounds. With a keen eye for perfection, Gaurav has traveled extensively in India and around the world capturing the myriad wildlife, diverse cultures, and stunning landscapes. All these years spent in the wild photographing a plethora of species across different landscapes has led him to acquire a lot of skills and knowledge with not just the camera, but also with tracking Big Cats and understanding wildlife behavior. He has successfully combined the years of experience from his travels and knowledge of photography to build the very foundation of The Wildside, thus paving the way for all his guests to be able to experience the best. He is a proud winner of 5 international photography awards presented by prestigious institutions, including the Natural History Museum in London, The Rutland Bird Fair in the United Kingdom, and The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C., USA.

Ghosts of the Granite Hills - a coffee table book that was recently published by Safari Crafters is a labour of love towards the incredible Jawai area. A place that I’ve spent over half a decade working on photographing Leopards, their co-existence with the locals and documenting the plethora of life that call these Leopards Hills their home.

This book was idea that was conceived by Kairav Engineer Kairav Engineer and co-authored by Yashwant Ranawat and myself.

The Big Cat People, Jonathan and Angela Scott Jonathan & Angie Scott penned down the foreword Santosh Saligram speer-headed the designing for this book.

Over the years, as we worked on this project, I also had the incredible pleasure of hosting over a 1000 guests on safari in Jawai and the kind of unique Leopard behaviour we’ve witnessed is second to none. The Lakes of Ranthambhore have surprises for you and each time when you think you’ve had a once-in-a-lifetime sighting which is hard to beat, something better happens.

That afternoon, we caught with Riddhi’s daughter walking around Rajbagh headed to the platform. Followed her and what seemed like a casual walk all of a sudden turned into a hunt - she stalked briefly, then sat stealthily and within seconds she leaped and ran. It was over. She picked up the turtle.

There was a moment of silence, just cameras firing. Incredible as always…

During my recently concluded tour in the Pantanal, 2 cubs of Marcela were the show-stopper. We had a few incredible sightings of this family and this sequence arguably was the best.

That morning, they played like there is no tomorrow on an open sand bank before following their mother into the tall grass behind.

I’ve just returned from Brazil after hosting 2 back-to-back tours in The Pantanal Wetlands spanning 3 weeks. Needless to say, the sightings and photography opportunities were stunning as always.

Great to have been in the Pantanal once again for the 5th year in a row and to many more to come.
