Oriental Darter or Indian Darter

Meditated long hours in the sun with little movement, while hunting for fish its body remains submerged in water only the neck sticking out like a snake. Also known as snake bird.

Seeing a tiger in captivity is one thing and seeing it in its natural habitat is quite another. From my personal experience seeing a tiger in the wild is definitely a thrill but tracking it is much more thrilling than seeing it strolling leisurely on tracks. This female was cooling herself in the waterhole during one of the hot summer afternoons, very mindful of my presence & keeping an eye on my movements. through out this encounter had a lump in my throat and at every eye contact the heart sank.

Spotted Owlet.

A small owl which breeds India and South-east Asia, adapted to living in cities and human habitation. They roost in hollow trees and crevices in buildings, usually at the same spot everyday unless their sleep is disturbed, they then change the place. In Hindu mythology owl is a mode of transport for goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth).

Great Egret

Also known as common egret is a widely distributed across tropical and temperate regions of the world. Its long bill is used like a spear to pierce its prey, while it stands motionless stalking. With white plumage the bird is elegant in flight which is rather slow with retracted neck.

Eurasian Coot

This black beauty found in Europe, Africa, Asia & Australia can be seen swimming long hours on open waters, it bobs its head and takes short dives in search of food. One can just sit next to a water body peacefully and keep clicking them.

Yellow-footed Green Pigeon

'Hariyal' as is called in Marathi, it is a state bird of state of Maharashtra (India) and found in Indian subcontinent. They can be seen sunning on top branches of trees in the morning.
If one has observed, the common domestic pigeon has red colored feet, they look beautiful reminiscent of Indian women when they put red color on their feet during festivals/marriages. These green pigeons have yellow feet as if they have applied turmeric to them.

White-throated Kingfisher.

One of my favorite birds to photograph, the color pattern are amazing and makes a very good picture. It mostly sits on open branches clearly visible and quite stable concentrating on its hunt, which allows easy spotting and good shots. Invariably this was the best photographed bird from every wildlife trip I've had.

Indian Roller

A commonly seen bird in India, where it is largely populated in plains, the local Hindi name for the bird is "Neel Kanth" meaning Blue-throated, which is also another name for deity The Shiva. According to the religion, it is believed that Shiva drank poison which turned his throat blue and hence the name. It is also considered sacred to Vishnu, another key deity in Hindu mythology. Adding chopped feather to the fodder given to cows was believed to increase the milk yield.

I remember giving a flying kisses to the bird whenever we saw one and thought it to be good omen during our early school days. The bird is also the state bird for many Indian states - Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka & Orissa.

Black-crowned Night Heron

These are stockily built birds with short bill, neck & legs as compared to their cousins Egrets or 'day' herons. During the daytime it rests in bushes and seen waiting to ambush preys during night or early in the morning. Got lucky to get some close shots of this saintly looking bird with pale green streaks on wings.
