LOST LURGAN – THE FORGOTTEN LAKEVIEW HOUSE 🏡
Once a magnificent Victorian residence surrounded by extensive grounds, Lakeview House stood on the Gilford Road in Lurgan for over 150 years.
Dating back to the mid-1800s, the house was home to the wealthy Watson family, prominent linen manufacturers whose influence extended far beyond Lurgan.
The family's linen business was established by Robert Watson in 1808 at The Flush, while his son William later made his fortune in New York, where Watson Avenue in the Bronx was named after him.
The Watsons were also generous benefactors of Lurgan. In 1856, William donated 1,000 guineas towards the town's Mechanics' Institute, while Francis Watson contributed a stained-glass window to Shankill Parish Church during its 1861 rebuilding.
By 1901, Lakeview House boasted at least 13 rooms and an astonishing 36 outbuildings, including stables, a coach house and dairy! The pool room and swimming pool were later added additions.
In later years, the property became associated with the Morton family of Morton Newspapers, the publishing business behind the Lurgan Mail and numerous other local newspapers.
Sadly, after years of neglect, this once-grand residence was demolished in September 2018, before its potential historic listing could be completed.
From linen fortunes and transatlantic success to newspaper publishing, Lakeview House witnessed generations of Lurgan's history before disappearing forever.
Does anyone remember Lakeview House or the Morton family living there? I'd love to hear your memories.
