We remember John Rogers, the first Protestant martyr under the reign of Queen Mary I, who was burned at the stake at Smithfield for his faithful witness to the truth of God’s Word.
John Rogers stood firm for the authority of Holy Scripture and for the Gospel of Jesus Christ, refusing to deny the truth even when faced with death. He left behind a wife and children, choosing obedience to God rather than the fear of man.
The Scriptures remind us:
“Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.” Revelation 2:10
And again:
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword.” Hebrews 4:12
May the testimony of John Rogers challenge us today to stand fast in the faith, to love the truth of God’s Word, and to be bold witnesses for Christ in our own generation, whatever the cost.
“Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13
