The Emperor's tomb viewpoint was harder than I expected in the midday heat.

Visit early morning or late afternoon to dodge the tour groups.

Bring water, sunscreen, repellent and cash, because there is little food inside.

I even spotted wild goats near the limestone cliffs.

It's a bit like a history lesson that sneaks in a nature walk.

Angkor Thom covers more than nine square kilometres and has five gates, each lined with giant statues. We went in through one of them.

A nice old town with a decent beach attached was the expectation for Cádiz.

Properly exploring its coastline turned up considerably more variety.

Whether Hospital Cave deserved a spot on a Cat Ba itinerary took some deciding, since a lot of guides mention it only in passing next to the island's beaches.

Walking through the old wartime rooms carved straight into the rock made clear it deserved more than that.

A bit like finding out the museum next door was better than the main attraction.

Everyone talks about the party buses and the tubing chaos from a decade ago. That’s not the Vang Vieng I found 🇱🇦

I spent nine days there, and it turned into my favourite part of Laos, hands down.

One moment stays with me. Standing at the top of Nam Xay viewpoint after forcing myself up that final stretch. I’m not great with heights. My hands were sweating on the bamboo railing, and I nearly turned back twice.

But when I got to the top and looked out over the valley, I felt properly proud of myself. Actually proud, not just Instagram-caption proud.

That’s Vang Vieng now. It’s not really about the parties anymore. It’s about small, slightly terrifying moments like that one.
