Everyone raves about the islands and Bangkok’s rooftop bars, but Ayutthaya was the day that actually stuck with me. Save this before you plan a Bangkok trip, you’ll want it 🇹🇭

📍 Ayutthaya, Thailand (the old capital of Siam, about 80km north of Bangkok)

I’ll be honest, I nearly skipped this as a day trip because Bangkok already had so much going on. Glad I didn’t. This place was the capital of Siam for 417 years and 33 kings before the Burmese army burned it to the ground in 1767, and once you know that, wandering the ruins of what used to be a genuine global trading hub hits very differently.

🏛️ Bang Pa-In Palace – a former royal summer palace 20km south, mixing Thai and Chinese architectural styles in one site. Add it on if you’ve got your own transport.

👕 Dress code – cover your shoulders and knees, especially at the active temples with resident monks. Pack a light layer, easy to get caught out in 35 degree heat.

💵 Cash only – every ticket booth takes cash, and small notes matter since 500 and 1,000 THB notes are hard to break early on. Nearest ATMs are back near the train station, not inside the park.

💰 Budget tip – the combo pass covers six major temples for $6.71, saving you $2.44 versus paying at each gate. Valid 30 days, cash only, buy it at your first stop.

👑 Why it lasted so long – three rivers meet at Ayutthaya, and the Siamese dug canals to turn it into a full water barrier. That’s how one dynasty held the capital for 417 years.

🌍 A proper trading hub – Chinese, Japanese, Persian, Portuguese, Dutch and French merchants all had communities along these riverbanks, and the Siamese court kept ties with Louis XIV’s France.
