Graphic Studio Dublin, Fine Art Printmakers, was established in 1960 to teach traditional printmaking skills (then unavailable in Irish art colleges), and to provide studios and technical assistance to artists to make fine art prints. Its five founders were Patrick Hickey, Leslie MacWeeney, Liam Miller, Elizabeth Rivers and Anne Yeats. Since 2007 the studios are housed in a stunning converted gran

ary building: Distillery House, North Circular Road, Dublin 1. Its gallery, Graphic Studio Gallery, opened in 1988 in Cope Street, Temple Bar and has become an essential cultural feature of the city. The Gallery was established to promote fine-art printmaking in Ireland and abroad, to educate the public about fine art printmaking, and to exhibit and sell fine art prints on behalf of our studio members and gallery artists. It showcases up to 11 national and international fine art print exhibitions annually, as well as hosting talks and print demonstrations. Graphic Studio Dublin facilitates the following print techniques: etching, lithography, linocut, drypoint, carborundum, woodblock, aquatint, photo etching, blind embossing, collography and mezzotint. Technical assistance and education of artist members in the above printmaking techniques is core to our ethos. The Visiting Artists programme, operated by Graphic Studio Dublin has made one of the most important contributions to the development of Irish printmaking over the last ten years. Under this scheme, Maser, Alice Maher, Mary Lohan, Gwen O'Dowd, Richard Gorman, William Crozier, Hughie O’Donohue, Tony O’Malley have been among many other renowned artists, who sometimes have little or no experience of printmaking, but are very well-known artists, are invited to work with a trained technician, under the guidance of our master printer, to produce an edition of prints that are showcased at the gallery. This one-day workshop focuses on drypoint as a direct and expressive intaglio technique, offering a unique opportunity to develop line, texture, and tonal variation through hand-drawn mark-making on plate. Participants work by incising directly into a printing surface to create rich, velvety lines and subtle tonal effects. The workshop focuses on drawing-led image development and the translation of gesture into printed form. Each stage of inking, wiping, and printing is demonstrated to support clear technical understanding and control. Participants produce a series of drypoint prints that explore both immediacy of mark and tonal depth in finished impressions.

In this workshop, participants are introduced to spit bite aquatint techniques as a way of creating expressive tonal effects in intaglio printmaking. The process involves applying ferric chloride with a brush directly onto a copper plate to build painterly marks and soft gradients. This workshop focuses on controlled yet experimental approaches to tone, surface, and image development. Demonstrations guide each stage of application, biting, and printing. Participants produce a small set of proof prints that explore atmospheric and expressive tonal outcomes.

Celebrate the opening:

This special exhibition brings together new works by members of Graphic Studio Dublin, each reflecting the individual concerns and visual languages that define their practice.

Around fifty artists have responded to the invitation, creating new prints unified in scale yet diverse in theme and technique, a testament to the shared spirit and continuing vitality of Ireland’s longest-established fine art print studio.

Alongside these member works, the exhibition features two new pieces by acclaimed artist Niamh O’Malley, produced at Graphic Studio Dublin under the Visiting Artist Scheme, as well as selected examples from other participating visiting artists. Together, these works celebrate the enduring role of collaboration and community in contemporary printmaking.
