Before your next important video call, check four things:

1. Position your camera at eye level.
2. Place your light in front of you, so your face is clearly visible.
3. Keep your background clean and professional.
4. Look into the lens when speaking, especially when making a recommendation.

Which one runs your calendar?

If you run meetings that keep running over… read this:

4 habits that make meetings overrun:

1. Waiting five minutes for latecomers
2. No agenda, so every topic gets equal time
3. Letting the loudest voice reopen decided points
4. Saving the real decision for the last two minutes

Every overrun quietly tells people your word is flexible.

3 ways to run tighter meetings:

1. Book 25 or 50 minutes, never 30 or 60
2. Put the decision you need at the top of the invite
3. Give someone the job of calling time

And here’s what most leaders miss.

Ending on time with one item open builds more trust than finishing late with everything closed.

Then this week, you:

1. Count how many of your meetings ran over last week
2. Cut every new invite by ten minutes
3. End on the minute, even mid-topic

The board asks one question. Suddenly you’re explaining the last six months.

Your mouth keeps going. Your credibility doesn’t.

If you present to executives or a board and tough questions throw you… read this:

4 signs pressure has taken over your answer:

1. You open with “So, a bit of background…”
2. You answer a question nobody asked
3. You look at your notes instead of the person who asked
4. You finish with “Does that make sense?”

Pressure makes you explain. Authority makes you answer.

Prepare before you walk in:

1. List the five questions you’d least like to hear
2. Write a one-sentence answer for each
3. Say them out loud until they sound boring

And here’s what most leaders miss.

Hard questions are often a test of your composure as much as your content. Pass the first, and the second gets easier.

Then this week, you:

1. Find your next high-stakes meeting
2. Prepare your five toughest questions
3. Rehearse each answer in one sentence

Your calendar is full of other people’s priorities.

Every one of them started with your yes.

If you lead people and your calendar no longer reflects your priorities… read this:

4 yeses senior leaders regret most:

1. The 15-minute call that becomes a weekly meeting
2. The working group nobody else wanted
3. The favour for a peer that lands on your team
4. The project you agreed to in a corridor

Every yes spends someone’s time. Often your team’s.

Before your next yes, ask 3 questions:

1. Does this move one of my top three priorities?
2. What will I drop to make room for it?
3. Would I still say yes if it started tomorrow?

And here’s what most leaders miss.

People respect a clear no more than a reluctant yes. The reluctant yes always shows up in the work.

Then this week, you:

1. List everything you’ve said yes to this month
2. Circle the ones that don’t fit your priorities
3. Hand one back, in one sentence

Protect your yes. It’s the most valuable thing you give.

18 years ago I landed in Ireland. The recession landed with me. 🤦‍♀️

📍 2008: Left Brazil. Moved to Ireland. New country, second language, and a few months later the economy fell off a cliff. Great timing.

📍 2008–2010: Waitressing. Saturday nights, full sections, sore feet. Smiled through all of it. The tips were great. Best way to survive as an immigrant student in a recession.

📍 2010–2014: The economy started picking up. Hotel reception. Long shifts. Delayed flights. Some cranky guests, and lots of lovely ones who made the long days worth it. Fixed problems I didn’t cause. Learned to stay calm when nobody else was.

📍 2014: Recession over. Multinationals pouring into Ireland. Left hospitality. Landed at eBay. Then Google. Bigger rooms, bigger titles. Same me.

📍 2018: Back to college while working full time. Postgraduate diploma in HR at NCI. Became an HR Manager. Learned the hard way that one sentence beats three paragraphs.

📍 2020: Pandemic. Back to college AGAIN. Marketing and Social Media at IT Carlow, from home, like the rest of the world.

📍 2022: Started my own business. Said yes to everything. Tried to be everything to everyone. Got it wrong. Signed my first positioning clients anyway. Some are still with me today.

📍 2023–2026: Got on stages. Jobs Expo. Biz Expo. PSA Ireland. Talked about The Authority Gap to rooms full of leaders.

📍 2024: Irish Examiner. 2025: Irish Independent. 2026: Irish Examiner again. Rebuilt my practice under my own name. Launched Leadership Authority™.

Some years it felt like starting from zero. Again. In my second language.

Turns out none of it was zero. Every shift, every course, every guest at that desk is in the work I do now.

To my clients who trusted me before I had the proof. To the women who opened doors for me without being asked. You know who you are. 🤎

I’m SO proud of the girl who landed here in 2008 and kept going.

Have strong boundaries and noticed some people stopped liking you?

Same here. And I’d hold every one of them again.

If you lead people and you’ve been bending your boundaries to keep the peace… read this:

4 boundaries senior leaders bend most:

1. Meetings booked straight into your focus time
2. Messages that expect a reply at 10pm
3. Being talked over in meetings
4. Work that belongs to another team landing on yours

Every boundary you bend teaches people where your real line is.

3 ways people react when you hold one:

1. Respect: they adjust and move on
2. Testing: they push once to see if you mean it
3. Withdrawal: they pull away, because your availability was what they valued

The pushback is usually loudest right before a boundary sticks. Hold it through the second push.

2. State it once, calmly, with no long explanation

I said no in one line. Then I wrote three more paragraphs.

We’ve all sent that email.

If you lead people and your inbox peaks at quarter end… read this:

The video tells the story. Here’s the pattern behind it.

4 signs your message reopened a decided question:

1. You wrote “because” more than once
2. Your reply is longer than their request
3. You listed every reason, hoping one would land
4. Somewhere in there, your frustration slipped in

Every extra reason is an invitation to argue.

Before you send, run 3 checks:

1. Delete everything after the decision. Does it still work?
2. Would you say this face to face, in this tone?
3. Drained and past 6pm? Schedule it for the morning.

And here’s what most leaders miss.

Owning your tone while holding your decision protects the relationship and the boundary at the same time.

Then this week, you:

1. Reread your last three “no” emails
2. Highlight the sentence that carries the decision
3. Notice how much you wrote after it

Decide in one line. Let the silence hold it.

Save this before your next difficult email.

From hotel reception to Google. Guess which one taught me more? 🤎

When I started in Ireland, the recession was in full swing and my office was a hotel reception desk.

Long shifts. Phones ringing. Guests arriving after delayed flights and long days, bringing all of it to my desk.

For a long time, I left that part out of my story. It didn’t feel impressive enough for the rooms I was walking into.

Then came eBay. Then Google. Then my own practice.

And here’s the funny part. The skills I lean on most with senior leaders today, I learned at that desk.

Reading a room in seconds.
Staying calm when someone else isn’t.
Saying what happens next, and making it happen.

So I’ve stopped hiding the receptionist. She’s the reason I’m good at what I do.
