"This is Edelweiss, the newest member of my sister's family, who is learning to live with two Labradors and a golden retriever as well as the humans. Like all the dogs before him, he had to have a little photoshoot and was about 10 weeks in this image. My sister is a dog trainer, so between us we managed to get Edelweiss posing beautifully - at least until he realised the backdrop is a bit like a curtain, and then had great fun trying to climb it! It was my first experience of photographing a cat, so was interesting to see how it differed from dogs and puppies, who are much more food oriented. Really pleased with the results!"

C R E A T I V I T Y

This image of Edelweiss was years in the making!

When I did my very first dog photography training with the wonderful Linda Johnstone (), she showed us a beautiful reflective image of a puppy, and I thought “I’d love to create a shot like that”

I duly bought a piece of black Perspex which I’ve had ever since, taken to multiple shoots but never quite got the chance to use…. Until Edelweiss had his kitten session!

The perspex was laid on top of my black backdrop and Edelweiss was encouraged to pose while sitting on it. It was towards the end of his proper posing so we weren’t sure how it would go, but he was the perfect model 🥰🥰🥰

The entire reflection was created in camera and I am thrilled with the result!!

A photoshoot isn’t all about posed portraits.

Edelweiss’s young human has an interest in music, and we wanted to capture her two loves in part of her session

So, we encouraged Edelweiss to walk along the keyboard of her electric piano for a few fun, cute shots 🥰🥰

A kitten photo shoot is certainly a different experience!!

The trick is to get as much as possible done before they figure out that the backdrop is just like a curtain that they can climb up 🤣🤣

Thankfully Edelweiss was very interested in the flirt stick, so we managed to get some beautiful portraits for his young human 🥰🥰

Did you know? Although my sessions are advertised as being for dogs and puppies, they can be easily adapted for other pets. Ask me for details!

Need a lead? No problem!

There are heaps of reasons your dog might not be able to go off-lead, from being a puppy or new rescue to needing a little extra safety or security if they’re a flight risk, or just a golden oldie with some health concerns

It doesn’t mean you can’t get those stunning photos you’re dreaming of

We’ll just scatter a little Photoshop Magic and no-one will ever know they weren’t off-lead 🤫🤐

M A G I C M O M E N T S

Sometimes clients come to me with a request to capture a specific moment which is precious to them. For Maggie and her human, it was a photo at a special place where Maggie had first gotten over her fear of water and learned to paddle

On the day, the light was difficult and my autofocus really struggled, so I couldn’t guarantee I’d got the shot, so I was absolutely thrilled to see this when I began editing!

From Maggie’s human: “It’s not only a beautiful photo of our girl, there’s a story behind it, there’s a life we live together…. This is no much more to us than just a beautiful shot”

So many things are different on a photoshoot day compared with a normal day in your dog’s life. There’s:

🐾 a weird stranger with a box making odd noises

🐾 hoomum/hoodad are a bit more tense than usual

🐾 all this sitting, posing and waiting that we don’t normally do

🐾 sometimes it’s at a brand new location with all the different and exciting sniffs

So it’s no wonder your dog might take a while to be comfortable - and that’s absolutely fine with me.

There’s always time to say hi and suss things out. We take time for him to relax and settle into the situation, so there’s no pressure to get things right straightaway.

And the good news is there are plenty of treats!! 🥳🥳

Some stories stay with you. The pups who've had challenges. The characters. The ones starting a whole new life.

Frankie was rescued from the meat trade by Soi Dog Foundation and brought to live with his new human in the UK. His photo session wasn't too long after he arrived here, and his soulful eyes told the story of what he'd been through.

It was such a privilege to capture this portrait to celebrate his new life ❤️❤️
