Lately, I’ve had a number of people approach me asking for hints, advice and lessons around photography. From developing their skills behind the camera, through to the editing process, and even sharing their work and ideas with me.
I just want to say a genuine thank you.
It means a lot that you trust me enough to ask, and I’m always happy to share what I’ve learned along the way. Photography is something I’ve spent years learning, experimenting with and enjoying, and if something I’ve picked up can help someone else grow, then I’m more than happy to pass it on.
Over the years, I’ve also come across photographers who have been much less willing to share their knowledge, space or opportunities. At times, that has created some really horrible situations and made something that should be enjoyable feel unnecessarily competitive and uncomfortable.
The truth is, there is enough room for everyone in photography.
We all see things differently. We all have our own styles, approaches, editing techniques and ways of working and that’s exactly what makes us individuals within this field. Someone learning from you doesn’t take away from what you do. Someone developing their own style doesn’t diminish yours.
Photography should be about learning, creating, experimenting, encouraging each other and enjoying the process. We should be able to share our skills and knowledge without feeling threatened, and support others without feeling like we’re giving something away.
There’s room for everyone to find their own voice behind the camera.
So, to those who have reached out recently thank you. Keep asking questions, keep learning, keep experimenting and most importantly, keep creating 📸 💜
