It can feel a bit overwhelming getting to grips with the different photography approaches when you’re looking for a wedding photographer. We all use slightly different approaches, and none are better or worse than another! They’re just different, and get different results in terms of how being photographed feels and how the photos look.

Here’s my take on what candid, prompted and posed photography, with some examples of photos I’ve taken with each approach. If you’re feeling a bit stuck on the kind of wedding photos you want or how to recognise each approach, hopefully this might be a start in helping! ♥️

(If you’re wondering and cba to scroll, I usually use a combo of all three at different times and depending on the wedding. Probs about 70% of my photos are candid, 20% prompted and 10% posed (prompting and posing almost exclusively being used during couples and group portraits, and minimally). Candid is my absolute fave - you just cannot beat those natural moments where people’s personalities shine through 🌸

Throwin’ it waaaay back to Andy & Elise’s gorgeous Lancashire wedding a few years back. Elise was one of the smiliest brides I’ve ever photographed - her joy and elation shone out of her face all day. I personally think there’s nothing more gorgeous in wedding photos than unbridled happiness 🥹 Future couples, don’t be afraid to smile your biggest smiles on your wedding day. Being demure is overrated xo

I hope you’re all enjoying this gorgeous weather and staying hydrated ☝🏼I’ve been quiet on insta recently but rest assured I’ve been doing some gorgeous bits behind the scenes and prepping for a very busy June in my personal life! Feeling very grateful and in love with my life at the moment ♥️

I seem to have a lucky habit of avoiding weddings on boiling hot days, but Maisie and Henry’s wedding (pictured) last August was an exception! With the day starting off with torrential rain and high humidity, the sun got its hat on and slow cooked us all through the afternoon 🌞 Sending thoughts and prayers to my fellow photographers working their magic during this heatwave 🙌🏼

Weddings are chock full of subtle but super meaningful moments and sneaking around like a lil photography ninja is one of my favourite things 🙏🏻

It can be tempting to plan your wedding to the nth degree, but don’t forget to leave a little space for things to breathe and evolve on their own. In my humble opinion, that’s where the magic happens ♥️

Been going through some old wedding galleries recently and found one where the bride is smiling SO HARD all day with all the joy spilling over (which I just bloody love) and it reminded me of this reel I made last year 🤣

Will be sharing the super smiley gallery sooooon but for now here’s my face showing quite plainly how bloody THRILLED I was on my own wedding day ♥️♥️

Things no one might have told you about weddings, through the medium of Yaz & Eilidh’s marvellous wedding day at The Barn on the Bay, Northumberland 🌊

If you’re in the general vicinity of the sea on your wedding day, I truly cannot recommend a morning dip more. You best believe I chucked my cameras to the wind and got myself straight in - the fact I’d had three hours sleep the night before became a distant memory as soon as I hit those waves!

There are just no rules about prep. You can do whatever you want, have whoever you want there, and do whatever feels right for you. This is a hill I will die on (with regards to all wedding planning tbh)

This wedding was the first time one id photographed where the couple met all of their guests before the ceremony and let me tell you, it was GORGEOUS. Yaz and Eilidh laid on sarnies and hot drinks for everyone which went down a treat and I’m sure lunch enthusiast Yaz will tell anyone that this is a wedding element that should be included far more often.

You can weave your values into your wedding day in so many ways. From more overt things like decor and favours to hiring suppliers who make you feel seen and safe, the ways you can bring the things that matter to you into your wedding day really are endless.

The upshot is - do what you like. Do what feels good. Do what feels natural to YOU. And that’s that.

A few previews from Lew & G’s quite frankly outrageous Islington wedding on Saturday 😍

London showed up in all its finery while we hopped between Chapel Market Tavern and Islington Town Hall, with a stint on a vintage London double decker for good measure! Such a gorgeous, chilled and FUN bunch of people to spend a spring Saturday with, not to mention the dress, the suit, the shoes, the cake, the music, the BOUQUET BAG - 11/10 across the board. 🙌🏼

Had the loveliest chat with a couple tonight about their upcoming wedding at Victoria Baths, and it reminded me of this stunner of a day from a few years back! Nick, Victoire and their loved ones made this epic Manchester wedding venue their own for the most chilled summer wedding 🌺 🌸

I've been hunkered down in my editing cave for the first time this year tonight, working away on G & Lew's previews from their quite frankly outrageous Islington wedding on Saturday! So excited for my gorgeous year of 2026 weddings 🫶
