Four months separate these two. The first is barely a photo — a trail cam catching a shape and a pair of eyes in the dark, before Shadow had a name. The second is from two nights ago, him working the plot with the kind of confidence you only get from months of nobody bothering you.

Save this if you’ve got your own before-and-afters sitting in a camera roll somewhere, unposted because the early ones felt too rough to share.

NFBP was a coal yard, then a lime-softening works. Nobody told the wildlife.

The common wasp has moved into an old burrow in the spoil — colonies peak in size right about now, in August, before the workers’ job shifts from foraging to defending a nest that’s already past its useful life. The hornet mimic hoverfly working the buddleia is the UK’s biggest, a species that’s only pushed this far north in the last few years. The painted ladies are usually only a generation or two removed from parents that flew up from North Africa. And the common blue is the reserve’s headline act — the calcareous grassland it needs was grown out of lime waste, which is the reason this place earned the name “butterfly park” in the first place.

Tree bumblebee, coming in to land.

Ginger thorax, black body, white tail — once that combination’s fixed in your head it’s the easiest bumblebee we get to name. They only turned up in Britain around 2001 and have pushed north ever since. Ours nest in old bird boxes and anything else with a cavity going spare.

The cosmos went in late and earned its keep, still feeding bees into August when most of the plot’s gone over.

What this worker Bumblebee is landing on isn’t one flower — it’s a few hundred. Every seed-to-be in that dark centre is its own tiny flower, each with its own nectar and pollen. So one sunflower is a full shift’s work without ever taking off again.

She wasn’t resting. She was trying to leave.
Fluttering against the greenhouse glass, working it for a gap that wasn’t there — and the glass gave her a second white doing the exact same thing, mirrored, just as stuck.
Small White. A butterfly reads light to navigate, which is the same thing that traps her in here: the brightness says out, the glass says no. Two spots on the forewing — female. I helped her find her way out, she now flys freely over the meadow.
