A typical river in the northern Highlands of Scotland picks up a lot of peat and soil as it runs down from the mountains above. Unsurprisingly the visibility in a lot of the pools which form along these rivers have terrible visibility, but you never know for sure unless you jump in, so that’s exactly what I did last week to have a proper look under a waterfall! I’m jumping into rivers with my snorkel and mask in this weeks YouTube video. This lovely waterfall was one I spotted peeking out of the north slope of Quinag mountain and had to check it out 🙂.

Today is David Attenborough’s 100th birthday. A truly amazing individual. I’ve been watching his programmes since I was a kid, and it’s fair to say they played a big part in my eventual move into studying biology.

I was lucky enough to get five minutes chatting to him in 2017, when he was still at the spritely young age of 91 when I was doing some PhD work at the Natural History Museum and he was there for a film shoot. He was utterly charming. I wanted to tell him how much of a difference he’d made to my trajectory and he went straight into wanting to talk about what I was doing. That insatiable child like curiosity, lifetime of learning on the job and lack of ego has produced one of the most well-informed and trusted people in the world. A true global treasure.

Sad to learn of the death of perhaps the most legendary camera operator at the BBC Natural History Unit yesterday in Nepal:

The cameraman and photographer won eight Emmy Awards for his work on acclaimed series like Blue Planet alongside Sir David Attenborough.
