A Hike to McCook’s Bothy

Deep in the wilderness of Ben Alder Estate lies McCook’s Bothy. One of Scotland’s most remote bothies, and one with a spooky reputation.

We set off from Culra Lodge for the hike, which meant we could cut down the distance considerably compared with the usual almost 20 km route from Dalwhinnie along Loch Ericht.

The walk took us through some incredible Highland scenery, with barely another person around. The weather was pretty wild too, so our cameras stayed in the bag for most of the hike. With all the lush green hills and dramatic landscapes, at times it honestly felt like we’d wandered into Middle-earth on our way to Mordor.

Apparently, McCook’s Bothy is also haunted… But we’ll save that story, and the bothy itself, for the next post.

The Far North of Scotland

Wild, remote and breathtaking. Three words that pretty much sum up this corner of the world.

From dramatic sea stacks and huge empty beaches to rugged mountains and lonely lochs, the far north of Scotland never fails to put things into perspective. It’s wild, peaceful and incredibly easy to get lost in.

This bag is a beast!

After testing the .gb OnePro Flex 50L for the past month, it’s safe to say this won’t be my last bag from PGYTECH.

It’s really well made, packed with cool features, and very comfortable to carry thanks to the proper hiking-style harness. Something you don’t usually see on a camera bag.

A little taste of our time at Culra Lodge

Tucked away in the middle of nowhere on Ben Alder Estate, Culra Lodge is about as remote as a Highland escape gets. Surrounded by mountains, lochs and nothing but wilderness.

During our stay, we had plenty of fun paddle boarding, enjoyed the wood-fired sauna and hot tub, and finished the evening with dinner, drinks and lots of laughs with Derek Mccrimmon Emily Chalmers Hannah & Lauren Mccrimmon 🖤

A pretty special place and an even better bunch of people to experience it with.

It’s always a little sad to say goodbye to the puffins as the season comes to an end here in Scotland, but we’re already looking forward to seeing them again next year.

Our final encounter at Dunnet Head couldn’t have been better. We were lucky enough to capture these little characters with their beaks full of sand eels, bringing home a proper catch before heading out to sea.

With the light fading fast, we had to push the Sony 200–600mm to its limits to get these shots. The conditions were challenging, but somehow that made capturing the moment even more rewarding.

You don’t need a better camera. You just need to start seeing these 7 things.

📌 SAVE this post and use it as a checklist the next time you head out with your camera.

Photography isn’t about training your eye to notice what makes an image interesting.

Before you press the shutter, slow down and look for these:

1. Use foreground to create a stronger sense of depth.
2. Follow leading lines to guide the viewer’s eye.
3. Look for reflections to add another layer of interest.
4. Chase the golden light to add warmth and depth.
5. Frame your subject naturally.
6. Show the scale by including a person.
7. Simplify your composition by removing distractions.

The more you practise spotting these, the less your camera matters. Great photos come from seeing the scene differently, not from buying better gear.

Puffin Yoga on Lunga Island

We all know puffins are funny little birds, but have you ever watched them stretch, groom themselves, or scratch? Some of their everyday moves look suspiciously like they’re following a yoga instructor!
