I think about this a lot when I’m behind a camera, as being photographed can feel surprisingly vulnerable. For me it has anyway.
I think we’re so used to performing. We know how we’re supposed to stand, how we’re supposed to smile, what a “good” photograph looks like. We polish ourselves a little. We put on the version of ourselves we think other people will like.
But the photographs I love most are rarely the polished ones....as you know!!!
I love the moments where nobody is trying to look like anything, they are just being.
That’s what I want to give people. Not photographs of the person they think they should be, a photographs of who they actually are!!!
Because to be truly seen is a pretty extraordinary thing. Maybe, years from now, that’s what these photographs will give you back, a little reminder....
