I recently decided to dedicate a week to birdspotting to give it a go And this meant slowing down and taking a new approach to photography. Instead of chasing a shot of light fleeting across hilltops, I had to let the shot come to me—sometikes this meant waiting and watching the same patch of wetland for 4 hours straight.

Surprisingly though, I was never bored. I hardly touched my phone and just felt at peace in the moment. After all this waiting and a very successful week of grebes and kites, I ended up with a bird that I have been wanting to see and photograph every since I picked up a camera.

It was a fleeting moment and a complete rush that only lasted a few seconds but it was all I needed. Super proud of this one

A little place by the sea

Sometimes, you've just gotta snap a shot of those places that have been done to death. It's kind of special in its own way seeing how different photographers from all over the world come together in one spot and all come away with a slightly different image.

To me it shows that photography couldn't be less about the camera but the process that each photographer employs when shooting a scene. I won't talk it up like I spent ages on this however this still remains as one of my favourite photos :)

Well I went out with the intention of finding the mysterious northern bird hide looking out onto kenfig pool after exploring what the south hide had to offer.

What I didn't expect was for it to be completely overgrown and inaccessible. The only proof of it's existence is found of the visitor map, no trace of it exists online and it's a shame that it remains so illusive.

However, pushing through the overgrown, boggy paths kicked up dozens of dragonflies and my mission soon changed from finding the hide to some arthropod photography

Today in the garden

Normally I've assumed that seeing red kites meant getting kitted up, hopping in the car and heading for the open fields of Bannau Brycheiniog.

This past month however, a pair of kites have flown over the skies of neath and I've felt incredibly fortunate to simply step outside and watch them. Normally I spot them when I'm without my camera however today, while working on the garden they flew right overhead.

This sparked a very nice 30 minutes of sitting in my garden with my camera so ofxourse I had to photograph the houseparrows nesting in the bush too

Some more shots from a foggy hilltop walk during the end of march which a definitely didn't forget to post... 😅

90% of this walk was pretty much a write off and as I began the walk home I decided to sit down in an old bridleway looking out on the foggy farmers field. Within 5 minutes getting comfortable I had a herd of lambs running up to inspect me before bolting back and forth which made for some amazing opportunities.

It's always worth slowing down and letting the world happen around you :)

Britain's Lost Rainforests

The west of Britain is one of the rare environments in which you can find temperate rainforest. Ever walked through a pocket of woodland that felt alive? Trees covered in other plants like mosses and lichens. Boulders covered in blankets of moss that carpet the ground.

These ecosystems are actually incredibly rare, only found in very few places across the globe including the Pacific north west, Japan, New Zealand and the south western tip of Patagonia. What was 20% of Britain's land area is now less than 1% having reduced by 95% during industrialisation and deforestation.

Photographing these places is special but understanding them is crucial. As many photographers and hikers venture out into Britain's backyard, many overlook how shaped our country is by man. Most of our land is taken up by forrestry plantation and monocultures of grassland, areas which most people see as being natural but are actually straining our wildlife and plant populations.

Find your local rainforest on Lost Rainforests of Britain, emerse yourself in one and fall in love with it. The start to protecting something is caring for it and I hugely encourage you to do so :)

Ever completed a hike and felt like there was no need to do it again? Maybe this will change your mind

These set of images are all pretty much the same composition taken from the same spot, all that's changed is the conditions and my focal length.

I wanted to show just how much lighting, weather and season contribute to a scene in landscape photography and learning to work with these conditions is crucial when planning an image.

Understanding where the sun will be throughout the year, the shadows and shapes it casts. Checking the forecast for snow and chancing a 4am alarm for 10 minutes of perfect light at sunrise. These are all unspoken actions taken by landscape photographers that can completely change a composition.
