Stare off...

Regardless of their size (weighing at least 1500kg), on land, the hippo is capable of charging at speeds of up to 30mph! With their poor eyesight however, I'm sure this giant wasn't really having a stare off with me, if he was, at that speed, I'd be a gonner!

Just a quick upload for today! Hope you like it 😊

Strong jaws...

The jaguar has the strongest bite of any big cat , relative to its size. Research by Adam Hartstone-Rose and colleagues at the University of South Carolina, who compared the bite forces of nine different cat species, reveals that a jaguar's bite force is only three-quarters as strong than that of a tiger.

However, given that jaguars are considerably smaller in comparison (the body mass of the individual in the study was only half that of the tiger), relatively speaking, their bite is stronger.

A jaguar's powerful jaw muscles give it a huge bite force concentrated through impressive canine teeth.

Carol Farneti Foster/Getty
β€œIf you had to choose, you’d want to be bitten by a jaguar, not a lion or a tiger. But pound for pound, jaguars pack a stronger punch,” says Adam.

β€œThe strength of the jaguar’s bite is due to the arrangement of its jaw muscles, which, relative to weight, are slightly stronger than those of other cats. In addition – also relative to weight – its jaws are slightly shorter, which increases the leverage for biting.”

These two modifications, though minor, combine to give the jaguar the strongest relative bite force. Indeed, a jaguar can bite straight through the skull of its prey and pierce the thick skin of a caiman with ease.

The Amur Leopard...

The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is a subspecies native to the Primorye region of southeastern Russia and northern China. It is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. In 2021, it was reported that the population was at approximately 110 individuals.

This leopard can easily be differentiated from other subspecies by its thick, pale cream-colored fur, particularly in winter. Rosettes on the flanks are 5 cm Γ— 5 cm and widely spaced, up to 2.5 cm, with thick, unbroken rings and darkened centers. Their fur is fairly soft, with long and dense hair.

In the Russian Far East, the Amur leopard currently inhabits an area of about 2,700 sq mi. It is well adapted to the cold climate and heavy snowfall of the region. The association of the leopard with mountainous areas

Elsewhere in China, Amur leopard distribution is fragmented, with small populations occurring foremost in isolated reserves. In Shanxi Province, leopards were recorded in 16 protected areas and six nature reserves.

The Hunt...

Lions hunt either collaboratively or by themselves. Collaborative hunting usually involves one lion approaching prey upwind with the intention of charging and driving it toward the rest of the pride, hiding in the bush downwind. Lions are not as fast as most of their prey, so they rely heavily on the element of surprise when hunting.

Blue Eyes...

Mutants are natural variations that occur due to spontaneous genetic changes or the expression of recessive (hidden) genes through inbreeding. Common mutations in big cats are albinism (pure white), chinchilla (white with pale markings), leucism (partial albinism/cream) and melanism (black). White lions, also known as blond lions, are not albino, but are leucistic and are uncommon in the wild as they lack normal camouflage. In the past, the obvious reaction to any unusual big cat was to shoot it for the trophy room. Mutations may have been wiped out before the genes could be passed on. Colour mutations that would disadvantage a wild big cat are now perpetuated in captivity for the sake of curiosity or aesthetics.

They tend to have a blue colouration in their eyes, black features on the tip of their noses, as well as β€œeye-liner” and dark patches behind their ears.
